is there anything that can be done about this?
i know there are many bays in tb,and they are
public beaches, but at least a couple times a
year one of the locals has to save someone from
drowning sometimes due to no fault of the swimmer
but most of the time because of reckless behavior.
with life guards (maybe just on weekends)there would be some ground or water rules.

Why the jet skis? The T.B. site says "YOU WON'T FIND JET SKIS"

These were not rentals but privately owned. The owners brought them in to use for the day and then left. There are no jet ski rental places in TB like you would find in Negril, Mobay, or Ocho Rios.

That's what I thought. You can't believe the number of accidents here in the States involving those monsters. That's one of the primary reasons why I keep coming back to T.B.. There's nothing worse than spending good money (and lot's of it), flying to what you thought was a peaceful vacation destination and hearing that horrible whining of jet skis. NO THANKS! Anyway - it's horrible what happened to that young man. How is the family coming along?

I don't know why Treasure Beach can't be designated a jet ski free area regardless of whether they are for personal or commercial use. In the US, Canada and Europe there are certain resort areas that jet skis are banned and for good reason. I personally love to ride them and I own one but when I want to use it I go to Negril or Ochi but stay away from T'Beach. I say this as being unrelated to the accident but on the issue of jet skis in the area.

I agree! I've ridden them and they're fun for about 10 minutes - just like a speed boat. In certain states (U.S.) you must be licensed to own, ride and even rent one. Not a bad idea. It would certainly cut back on the accidents. Who would be so irresponsible to not even wear a life vest while riding one?! The post said that Stevie Moxam jumped in to assist because the girls riding couldn't swim. Life vests? The guilt must weigh heavy on their hearts.
So sad...
I lost a close friend years back in a similar situation. Professional fishing guide - wading the flats at night and he stepped into a hole. His waders filled up like a water balloon and that was the end of him. Had he been wearing a life vest he'd be fishing today. So important. I've seen the visitors photos and the boat captain on his way to Pelican Bar is wearing a bright orange vest - way to go!
Sorry - I'm rambling...

Be smart and be safe.

For accuracy's sake, we'd like to point out that the circumstances of how Steve Moxam entered the water are not confirmed.

Does anyone know if the girls that were saved had anything to say about Stevie's drowning? Has anyone talked to them to see exactly what happened?

I was going to point out how those jet ski's helped ruin Negril's beaches due to reef damages but the hurricanes did much the same already to TB. Don't compound the damage by allowing jet ski's in. I didn't start coming to TB for A/C, television, telephones, jet ski's, internet access and parasailing. Some of these are coming (sigh) but lets hope the jet ski's and parasailing don't catch on. I was told by a fisherman that Jason Henzell wants to haul that semi-sunk ship in Black Rivers harbor to TB so scuba folks have something to do. That sounds like
a). a good idea
b). a tall tale because why not pilot an old boat here and just sink it? That would be much cheaper.
Now for a good tourist idea, what about those donkey taxi's?

I think this is getting WAY off topic- the topic is lifeguards. They are a wonderful idea but who can pay them?

off the topic as the above post is

It is a bit insulting to RESIDENTS that "tourists don't come here for internet access, ac, tv, telephones and jet skis but they are coming SIGH"...(so we should go without? do you and your children live somewhere with NO PHONE OR INTERNET AC OR TELEVISION????!!!!)

Just because Treasure Beach isn't NEGRIL, doesn't mean the RESIDENTS can't and don't and shouldn't enjoy some of these modern conveniences.

If parasailing comes, and it polutes your view of the sky, well then I guess it's time to find somewhere more "bush" to stay... if parasailing comes, that is at least 1 or 2 more residents starting a NEW business venture, feeding 1 or 2 or more families.

Remember, you think your in heaven but your living in hell... your idea of quaint and how it should be may not always be the best for all concerned.

Starting later this summer, PADI/etc. scuba dive/boat service will be available to our
guests in TB, as well as charter-day sailing
aboard 'The Adventuress', both by advance
arrangement only. Details soon come...

I must agree with some of 'Offtopic's' remarks.
It is a double edged sword though. It is up to the residents how their town should be. Not us tourists who visit once a year. They are smart people, and will take into account the negative impact of such things as jet skis when deciding on which direction to go. They also have hindsight of what happened to Negril, which of course is a lot different than my first visit there in 1983. Treasure Beach residents will decide what is best for them, not what is best for the tourist necessarily. Again, it is easy for us tourists to say what they should do as we skip down their streets with our pockets full of money for a week or two. Try living in their shoes year in and year out. They are very smart people, and they don't need to mold their town to our needs. Of course we hope they do, because it is a no brainer that us folks who visit there like it just the way it is. They will figure out what is best for them in the long run. Not what is best for us.

excuse me "offtopic",

Are you a resident of Treasure Beach?

That is a very good question "preservationist".

Offtopic,
Did I say the residents of Treasure Beach shouldn't have A/C, telephones, internet access, jet ski's or parasailing? NO! My words seemed clear enough in that I said I didn't come here for that. I've never had a telephone in my room, never used A/C when I had it and I for one am happy to be away from the internet on my vacation. I see these things offered in more and more area rentals. None of those things hold any charm for me. You're right. If parasailing, jet ski's and monstrous water parks do turn out to be the direction Treasure Beach chooses for the future; I'll quietly find "bush" elsewhere and take my vacation time somewhere the climate suits me better. You seem soooo knowledgable, do tell me how many of those businesses are owned by natives of Negril and how many are owned by foreign? The drum jerk stands aren't even owned by the people manning them. I think it might be wise to ask the folks living in Culloden and Whitehouse how the new developments (RIU is coming) have affected the economy? Progress is a two edged sword and just about anyone that comes to TB wants nothing but the best for its citizens; I just don't think it manifests itself in a Burger King or a Ski-Do.

For the record I (see earlier post) am a Jamaican who grew up in Treasure Beach and still live in Jamaica. As a Jamaican who should have a say in how 'tings run...I say NO, NO, NO to jet skis and parasails etc. Sometimes we have to make small sacrifices for the big picture.

Yes I am a resident and not trying to start a war in here.

I agree that development must take into account the potential damage and lack of appeal to visiters but development must and will occur and with that comes more work for more people.

Why is it the smallest little statement has to always be blown so much out of proportion? Guys relax and live life to it's fullest while you can, because it could end in s split second.

I can't see where anything is being blown out of proportion. It's called having a healthy discussion, even if you don't agree with the other person's point of view. And just in case anyone asks I'm Jamaican and also from St Elizabeth.
