are the stairs to pelican bar difficult to climb? we have someone in our group that has a hard time climbing rocky surfaces, he weighs over 300 pounds and is wondering if he will be able to get up them stairs.
Hi Pete-
We were there in July. One friend with us weighs well over 300. She was able to climb up without too much problem. She did fall when climbing back down. Because of her weight, it was a very hard fall and she's just now ALMOST fully recovered.
Floyd builds some STRONG steps! My friend slipped, but the steps were very stable. I wonder if it had anything to do with the 5 or 6 Red Stripes she had consumed...? :-)
Hi, Pete--
I'm certainly no "Skinny Minnie" and I was able to go up the stairs--albeit slowly. I was worried about getting back down, but our wonderful boatman, Bernard, suggested I go down backwards so I could hold on better, and that worked just fine ... of course, I hadn't just had 5 or 6 Red Stripes, but ...
The steps are small, round, tree trunks (wood chopped from the bush)... hard to climb unless you have strong feet and good balance! They are bent and uneven. Look at some of the pictures in the photo gallery. There is one with a group standing in front of the "stairs". That should help you make your decision. Or your friend could always wade in the water underneath the bar in the shade... a perfect place for a Red Stripe!!
Can someone tell me exactly where this Pelican Bar is located. My other question is "Where is the bathroom". I know drinking beer is one way of emptying the bladder frequently.
The bathroom???
There are miles of it all around the Pelican bar :-)
It's about 1/2 - 3/4 mile off the coast near Black River...
Here's a pic of the lovely Miss Beth on those very stairs. As someone else pointed out, The Pelican is closer to Parottee, about a mile from the mouth of The Black River. The bathrooms are the same ones the fish use :-)
There is no bathroom unless you want to swim to shore and go inna de bush!! You can go before you go, or if you go to Black River, go there and stop at the reef on the way back. It is situated in the ocean, up on stilts (on a sort of sandbar reef) about a quarter mile off the beach.
Well, just curious, the Pelican bar is off Parrotee Point, in the sea, approx mid way between TB and Black River. No "bathroom" but if you need a pee don't tell anyone and just submerge yourself in the warm waters of the Caribbean. I'll promise not to tell.
I think the bathroom at Floyd's is a "don't ask...don't tell" issue.
