Is it true that two new cottages were built on the beachfront of the main house? Also are Dawn and Joclyn still there? Any pictures? Thanks

Photos should be up on the ad listed in the Where To Stay section within a day or two. I will post a message here to let you know when the photos are up.

Calabash House is located on Calabash Bay. If you look at the map located on the left of the Where to Stay section, you will find it in Calabash Bay.

I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the changes at Calabash House. We used to stay there but since they've since put up cottages which almost completely block the view of the sea and the beach, I don't think we'd be going back. It used to be that you could sit on the verandah and have a meal and look out to sea but it's just not the same anymore. However, their cook Dawn is a dream and we will miss her.

I booked Calabash for the week of New Years with a group of Friends. I had been to Treasure Beach in July on a day trip and really loved the vibe of the place. I researched thru this board and found Calabash House. What made me interested in it was the fact that it had more than enough space. But the deciding factor was it was on the beach with two Verendahs, one that looked out on the Mountains and the other that had this amazing veiw of the Ocean. In fact the words in the ad said that the only thing between you and the Ocean was the Beach and Palm trees. I dreamed of many lazy days on those Verendahs, relaxing, and just marinating in the sun.

Imagine my dissapointment to find two board houses totally obscuring the veiw. The owner has moved on property and you no longer have the privacy you think you are getting when you chose a private house. Also she has a lot of company coming and going in your PURCHASED SPACE. I am a people person and I chose private homes so that my guests and I can have our own space. I also found that the owner and her friend who also stays in the other Board house were in and out of our purchased space when we were not there. I won't be going back, If she is going to run a Hostel she should lower the rate and let you know that even when you rent the entire house there will still be uninvited guests coming at their whim.

Dawn the housekeeper/cook and Mr. Jocelyn the caretaker are wonderful people, and I am saddened that I will never have their hospitality again, but when I pay for a place it should only be mine if I have rented the entire facility.

Rebecca we discussed this while I was there and I am sure this will not be posted but I wanted you to know my feelings on this matter. I did not get what I paid for and I felt cheated.

As with all changes, Calabash House has experienced some growing pains. However, thanks to constructive criticism and good advice from our guests, we feel we are improving every day.

Thanks to Orbra's suggestions, we now have signs up guiding visitors for the cottages to use the outside paths as to not disturb the guests in the main house. The main house also has posted signs indicating it is a private house and only those booked in the house and their guests are allowed.

The ad listed on this site has now been changed including new photos which should make apparent the new look and feel of Calabash House.

With Miss Julie on premisis, we have already seen the foliage in the yard increase and this will only continue to improve.

Miss Elizabeth has created three beautiful mosaics, two found in the house and one found outside, which bring color and brightness to the house and it's surroundings.

Structural and asthetic changes to the main house and yard will be forthcoming allowing more vantage and view points and meditation corners.

And, as stated in the previous comments, Miss Dawn and Joslyn are still around waiting to show you their lovely hospitality and Dawn's great cooking.

We look forward to the results of the metamorphous which Calabash House is undergoing and sincerely apologize to those who have been disappointed and inconvenienced during the process. We hope you will give the "new" Calabash House a try as it is still a wonderful large house, situated in a great location, and has Dawn and Joslyn ready to greet you.

Thanks for all the input I have stayed there with friends two times and the best part was having the whole house private and with a view from both front and back that were great Having no owners on the property allowed you great privacy and have all the fun you want without other people Well I'm sure I'll find another cool spot to stay this spring It will be my 4th time back and I just love the place and Rebbeca is wonderful She will never steer you in the wrong direction If anyone is going during the super bowl Cory at Sunset Has the best party and best view at sunset I was there last year and it was great Look up Zim and have a cold one with him

I admire and appreciate the changes at the Calabash House. The flavor of the place is the same only better. It's a pity and a shame that Obra wasn't able to grasp the new concept of progressiveness that Elizabeth and Julie are bringing to bear on the property. Julie who started the resturant 'Translove' many years back, has been an important part of theTreasure Beach ethos ever since and Elizabeth who has lived in Jamaica for 20 some years, has gleaned many of the designs for her murals and 'art-garb' from Jamdown-- that have made a sensational splash across the globe.
I stayed there for a week and loved overhearing many of the conversations these two woman were having with their friends on the beach, dealing with literature, politics, music. And what struck me-- was how many of the people under discussion also cherish the place and stay there whenever they can.
Calabash House will prevail as a very important forum for people to meet and frolick, meditate and soak in the sea and sun alike, but more importantly- as a place to enjoy that beautiful hospitality that Jamaica is so famous for. And a changing hands of ownership can never alter that amazing grace and space.
Sorry for those few who just 'dont get it'.
All the best for Calabash House in the upcoming years, I remain your friend, Jonas Berkley
