What is the best way to spend in Treasure Beach? Usually I stay in Negril, bring traveler's checks, and have no problem exchanging them for JA$. Is there a cambio or bank in TB where I can do the same? If not, what do you suggest is the best way for me to handle money while I am there?

There are several places in TB where you can exchange $ including traveler's checks. Just ask a staff member of where you are staying for the nearest place to you.

Some people like to just get cash advances on their credit cards at ATM machines. I'm not sure if this is cheaper than T/Cs when you compare the fees associated with them.

There's an ATM at the airport on Montego Bay, and in Black River and Junction, both about 30 minutes from Treasure Beach.

I used American dollars at restaurants, for lodgings, and for other large expenses. I never had trouble finding places that would take Amercian dollars.

Why not just use your ATM card?

Nurse, I had a problem using my ATM a couple of years ago in Ocho Rios, and ever since then I stick with traveler's checks. I may bring it and see how it goes, but I'm planning on using TC's.

So far I have been lucky with my ATM card. I usually bring some cash, and get more as needed.

When I used to stay in Negril & Ochie I used tc's.
I figured they would be a pain in TB.

Lyntt,

Last March at the MoBay airport I had no problem using my ATM card to withdraw $600 JA ($100 US at the time)from my US based checking account. I also used traveler's checks and had no problem using them in TB for the taxi ride and housing.

I had no problem cashing TC's at Jake's, and I'm sure some of the other hotels will cash them, too. The last couple of times I've gone to TB, however, I've just brought cash (I know, I know, this isn't wise!) next time I think I'll try a combination of TC's, cash and my ATM card ...

Please be reminded that the only ATM machines are located in Junction and Black River, both of which are a 30 minute drive out of Treasure Beach. I would always advise traveler's checks as the way to go.

We are coming down on Sunday and very much looking forward to our first TB visit. Just so I am sure I understand...I am planning on bringing a little cash & more TCs. We will be stopping at a cambio in MB on the way. I plan to get change some money there. If we run out once in TB, where in TB area can I cash TCs? At the hotels? Anyplace else? How is the exchange rate compared to the cambios in junction/black river??

Ben

Jake's gave me a JA$60/US$1 exchange rate and didn't charge a commission. When I changed $$ at the cambio in MoBay they gave me a JA$57/US$1 rate.

The Cambio at the airport always gives the lowest rate. Wait until you leave the airport and ask your driver to stop at any Cambio in the area for a much better rate. Ask where you are staying for the closest place to exchange and they will be able to advise you.

Safe travels!

Please be careful about changing money at the Cambio at the airport. They really ripped off me and several traveling companions last May. I have alway had good luck using ATM's in Black River and Junction. Jake's is good about exchanging also. Can't wait for a bank or ATM in TB!
