I am so excited to have made reservations at Calabash House in January 2006! Can anyone who has stayed there tell me any info - the pix look great, but I'd love to know your favorite things about the house, what's nearby, the condition of the beach, and anything else I can find out. Is there anything I should make sure to bring? Anything I must do while there? I have been to Jamaica over 15 times, but have never spent time in Treasure Beach so I'm eagerly awaiting this trip. Thanks in advance for any and all information,

Lynn

Lynn-

I stayed at Calabash House in March 2005 and it was great! If you love to hang out on porches this is the perfect house! There are big, comfortable chairs and you could sit there for hours just staring out at the sea! There is also a dining table, so meals can be outside too!

I found the beach really nice. You can bring the lounge chairs down to the beach and if you need a break from the sun but don't want to leave the beach, there is a covered gazebo. Also a great spot for watching sunsets! We did bring some inflatable mats/tubes for hanging out in the water so if you like to float I would pack one.

The bedrooms are comfortable with air conditioning and big private bathrooms. We did not spend much time inside the house except to sleep and refill our drinks! The kitchen is well equipped. We hired Dawn to cook us breakfast and dinner and she is fabulous!

And you will love Joslyn, the caretaker. If you like to play dominos he's your man!

Things to bring: lots of books if you are a reader, some playing cards, maybe a game or two. I think they have a CD player, so CD's (we brought our own but I am pretty sure there was one there).

You will have love Calabash House and Treasure Beach!

Meredith

Thanks so much for your response Meredith. I'm a Negril-lover, but lately it's just been too "touristy" if you know what I mean. Several people have suggested Treasure Beach as an alternative and I'm looking forward to learning my way around.

I do have a couple of questions, if you don't mind. I know that we can get breakfast and dinner at the house - I'm looking forward to Dawn's cooking! But are there many places to pick up a quick lunch within walking distance, or should we plan on cooking? Also, I will only be there for a week, but would like to know if there are any "must-do" events in the way of entertainment, live music, etc.

Thanks again!

Calabash House now has a new owner so I'm not sure what is going on. I see marl in the driveway so I'm assuming there is going to be construction. I understand that they are putting two cottages down at the sea side. Dawn is still there and is truly a fantastic asset to that house. Once you taste her cooking you won't want to eat anywhere else. However, if you do, there are restaurants withing five minutes to ten minutes walk from there.

Hey Lynn-

Treasure Beaches must do's are plenty, and depending on budget and energy level. Here are a few "must do's"
Jack Sprats for killer conch soup & pizza's, Dougies rum punch @ Jakes, boatride to the Pelican bar to watch a sunset, Wild Onion on Thurs nite?, shoot'n pool or just hanging out at South Jamm'n, Heart of Love Bakery for breakfast/coffee, Warm coco bread from the bakery past Hueys motorcycle shop, the list goes on & on Lynn.
I understand you are there for a week. I bet after 48hrs your going to wish you would booked for a longer stay in TB. I venture to say its going to be your best trip to Jamaica in a very long time.
I too was a Negril/Westend Road return'ee since the mid 80's. I will visit the west side but never plan to stay there longer than a day.
TB is sooo much better in sooo many ways its not fair comparing. You are about to encounter a Jamaica you may have only read about. Its super safe, friendly, respectful, tranquil, relaxing, affordable and most of all FUN!!

Lynn, there are plenty of places easy walking distance from Calabash House. If you're into jerk, a must-do is M&D Grocery every Saturday and knock-out conch soup on Sundays. Walk the other way and also try my favorite box chicken Harry does at the little restaurant in Kingfisher Plaza. Jack Sprat is great for pizza and seafood but don't hesitate to try any of the little roadside shops like Potsnapper, Natural Vibes, Diner's Delight and Morris in Swaby Plaza. They all serve a good meal with friendly service. As for entertainment, just ask around. Enjoy!

Thank you all for your responses - I'm printing everything out so that I don't have to trust my memory!

SouthSide, I ALWAYS wish I'd stayed longer! I'm a teacher, though, so I plan my travel around school breaks. I usually go to Jamaica for a week around new year's, Barbados in April for spring break, and wherever I can afford for several weeks in the summer.

Hi Lynn,

We look forward to welcoming you to Treasure Beach, as a Jamaican who loves it!

I would like to give you some ideas of other things to do within the area (in the 45 minute radius) if you want to do some exploring and getting to know the island:

- Go and visit the Appleton Estate Rum Tour in Siloah, about 30 minutes away, if. The tour is fantastic, but you can also pre-order a fantastic Jamaican lunch, the tour is $15.00 p.p. and includes a welcome drink, the rum tour, a rum tasting session and a comp. bottle of rum - and the lunch package at $30.00 p.p. includes all the above, but with all drinks, and a lovely Jamaican lunch of a chicken dish, Jamaican rice and peas, a callaloo, cheese and pumpkin casserole, salad, rolls and a rum cake with cream for desert...there is alot to do and see there. For reservations for the lunch package - the # is 963-9215-7 or e-mail us at appleton@infochan.com - for just the Tour, you do not need to make reservations...we are open from Mondays to Saturdays and closed on Sundays.

- From there, you should not miss the spectacular YS Falls, just about ten minutes from Appleton, it is a breathtaking experience and you will be able to swim in the water if you wish...

- And do not forget the Black River Safari located in the heart of Black River, a very informative and fun river cruise down the Black River where you will glean American crocs, and hear all about the Morass.

- Check with Jake's as to when they do their local movie night at Jack Sprat - I think it is on a Thursday night, lovely sitting outside with the sea and stars.

Many visitors marry two of the tours in a day for a full day's worth of fun!

If you want to explore and have a lovely spa day, then check Oasis Spa in Belmont, they give amazing massage, facials and have Jamaican spa meals to go...

Enjoy Treasure Beach and the good people!
