40 days and 40 nights...

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Rebecca on Monday, October 17, 2005 - 09:04 am: Edit Post

It does seem like 40 days and 40 nights. I know a few of us have discussed ark building in the last couple of days!

It seems Wilma (just named today) is loving Jamaica and continues to hang over and around us. We have been getting rain almost daily for the last few weeks. Not unusual for this time of year as it is rainy season, however, the last 4 days have been very rainy with tropical force rains at times. Flooding is occuring around the island and in Treasure Beach. The weather report . . . more rain for a few more days!

Hi everyone. I'll be travelling from London to Treasure Beach (Via Mo' Bay) by car in a couple of weeks. Hopefully the rains will have receeded by then! Are all of the road links open for this particular journey?

I did n't want to say 40 days and nights. I hope it doesn't come true. My husband had been trying to dig for our foundation. I told him maybe we better start building an arc instead of house.

Nurse where are you building your house.

Well it is still raining and all the ponds are overflowing. The winds are picking up a bit, but still not strong and the sea is getting ruff. Boats are pulled out.

I will be out and about today as I am attempting to travel to Mobay in an hour. I will bring my camera along (if it works) and will update you later today.

Frenchman, we are building in Great Bay (where my husband is from).

Rebecca, stay safe (and dry if possible).

Just got back about an hour ago. The road conditions are worsening as the rains are still falling. It seems Wilma has snuck up on us and bit us bad. The flooding is very bad all over the island as well as in Treasure Beach. Great Pond has now merged with the pond in Great Bay and I hear the road to Great Bay is under water but still passable. The main road into Treasure Beach is still usable, but in very ruff shape and if we get more rain tonight, I believe it will be impassable in the morning. The good news is, the tractor has been making regular vists to the road, so in no time it should be passable again. What is happening is we will get a tropical downpour for about 30 minutes which floods out the roads, but then we won't have any rain for an hour or so and the flood waters subside and the roads are passable again.

Many houses are experiencing flooding as the ponds are swelling.

The seaside is also experiencing very high and rough seas. The boats have been hauled up.

The weather prediction is another 24 - 36 hours of this.

The following are two photos I took while leaving out of town 7:30 this morning. When I got back it was too dark to take any further photos.

As always, I will keep you posted.

As of Tuesday night, the road in and out of Treasure Beach is very heavy with water. There's flooding in yards/houses near Kingfisher Plaza.

And its being reported that we'll have to deal with Wilma's effects for two more days.

If you are arriving in the next couple of days, we suggest you contact your villa/driver to make sure the road is passable. Getting into and out of Montego Bay airport is fine, its just the last leg down to Treasure Beach that's questionable. We'll have more info tomorrow.

Here are a couple of shots of the sea. These were taken when it was calm enough to go outside.

Well, the sky looks a lot brighter this morning, although there is a very big black mass of clouds heading our way. We had about 3 more bouts of heavy rains during the night. I am heading out now, hopefully beating the next round of rain, with camera in hand.

At 7:30 Wednesday morning, the sea is still very rough sea but the SUN IS SHINING. What a welcome sight. Hopefully, Wilma is far enough away to do any more damage...though we're still keeping our eye on this menace.

We don't have any more info on the roads at this time.

God help those who lay in its path from here. Its now a Cat 5 sat storm and weather.com is reporting:
It's been confirmed: Hurricane Wilma, with a pressure of 882 mb, is the most intense hurricane on record in the Atlantic Basin. Wilma, after undergoing a stunning intensifcation overnight, is now a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane packing sustained winds of 175 mph. The eye of the violent storm is now following a wobbling WNW track through the western Caribbean with a turn toward the NW expected within the next 24 hours.
Fluctuations in intensity are likely, but Wilma is forecast to remain an extremely dangerous Category 5 hurricane through Thursday. The projected track of the storm takes it through the Yucatan Channel into the extreme southern Gulf of Mexico Friday night. After that, Wilma is expected to come under the influence of westerly winds aloft blowing across the Gulf. That should hurl the hurricane toward the Florida Peninsula, probably the southern part of the peninsula, this weekend. Wilma is expected to be weakening by then, but weakening is a relative term and Wilma may still be a major hurricane (winds over 110 mph) when it makes landfall.

Just getting in from a quick tour. The sea is still very rough and high with the waves pounding in.

wilmacb

The sun has been peeping out all morning!!!!! But right now we are having a heavy downpour.

The roads are flooded but passable with higher vehicles.

sunset

This is in front of the entrance to Sunset Resort.

I have just gotten a report from Great Bay that Long Pond, Great Pond, Rush Pond, and Pen Pond are now all one. The estimate is 6 - 12 houses are flooded out in Great Bay.

ponds

In Calabash Bay in between Kingfisher Plaza and May Len Plaza Great Pond has flooded 4 houses and 3 businesses and Great Pond is about 5 feet from the road.

The pond across the street from the May Len Plaza is flowing over the road. Upon close observation, shrimp were discovered floating in the overflow.

I have heard of only one house flooded out in Frenchman's District and I have not heard of any flooded out in Billy's Bay.

I have had my washtub sitting outside since Thursday and according to the "highly scientific data collected there" it looks like we have had about 17 inches of rain since Thursday.

its not raining at the moment, though the skies are overcast and we had a squall earlier.

Here are some pics of the road by Kingfisher Plaza to the May Len Plaza, just before you reach Calabash Bay.

Our sympathies to those in flooded out houses and yards...

This is not the sea. This is a pic of the now Super Pond that has formed from Long Pond, Great Pond, Rush Pond, and Pen Pond running together. It was taken from the May Pen plaza looking towards Great Bay

You can see that the road here IS passable. The FedEx driver was in the area around 9am, so things are moving.

We've had a few more intense showers today. One of which measured two inches on my washtub scale and it is raining as I type.

The sea has actually intensified during the afternoon. We are hoping it will be dying down soon.

I took a walk down to Frenchmans' this afternoon and here is what I saw.
