Just about everyone that comes to Treasure Beach does so to escape the AI atmosphere that is so common on the North Coast and seems to be spreading in Negril. It's always been a tightrope that us TB tourists walk in wanting better financial opportunities for TB's residents and not wanting large resorts that will spoil the rustic location. While attempting to walk to Great Bay from Calabash Bay along Old Wharf Road we came across what must be the largest building in town. Called Taino, workman were buliding away. This is closest to Tranquility Bay and indeed some folks we asked thought it was to house parents of those children. It's far too big to limit its use for that purpose. I guess the biggest shock was that no one had posted anything about this. Does anyone know who is financing this complex? If a sports complex is built (which I thought was just in the discussion stage) is this where the out of towners will be housed? I'd be very interested in hearing what others have to say. I must point out that it is in a remote area not very near any other housing nor food or drink so could it be (choke, choke) an AI?
Taino is a Jamaican owned, eight bedroom, upscale guest house. They are also hoping to have a restaurant there with the capability of catering for weddings, family reunions, etc.
It is scheduled to open summer/fall 2005 at which time I am sure you will be hearing more about it.
It will not be an all-inclusive.
Whew!
It sure looked larger than 8 bedrooms and I don't doubt that it is "upscale". Well, welcome them to Treasure Beach for me.
Now if I can only find the footpath to Great Bay....
yea mike,
sorry you couldnt make it by that route, it was already getting bad when iwas last there with tranquility, ahh!!!!! i long for those days when you could just walk all the way by the sea and take a break and a swim in "ponties hole" bad spell, but as we grow we must give up some stuff. next time maybe you will get there, and a side trip to back seaside [ if it can be arranged] is always fun.
glad you guys had a good time.
walk good
ps any photos?
I too miss the days when you could walk from Billys Bay all the way to Great Bay, these are the things that made Treasure Beach so beautiful.
Trasure Beach has changed and will never be the same for me.
Nige
When your sister and I talked she said she would have been glad to give me a lift had she known earlier. My mistake. I brought along a movie camera this trip which I shot perhaps ten minutes with total. I'm sure I'll be getting some photo's from others in our group and I'll try to post them or talk them into posting here.
I also heard about a sand bottom cave nearby that we had hoped to swim to. Next trip, soon come.
Mike
hey mike,
thats out on the cliffs my childhood cave we all went to, you can swim in and it opens up into a large cavern with a safe sand bottom, some of the locals can even catch fish by hand in there, definately worth a visit.
walk good
ps, you can buck up with sandy next time, nu fret
It Sally Henzell build it.
No she did not. It's hardly likely that Sally H would build something like that.
I find it very interesting that the people who don't like the change in Treasure Beach are the ones who are directly responsible for it. If there had been no visitors to Treasure Beach, it would have remained the same as it has been for the last hundred years. That is...no visitors...no large unsightly guest houses to block your walk to Great Bay.
You can still walk from Billy's Bay to Great Bay, you just have to cut around Tranquility Bay School and follow the goat tracks. The tracks end back up around the coves in front of Viking's House, Irie Cabins and Ital Rest. From there you can still continue on the seaside track to Great Bay Beach and Pedro Bluff.
Well I sure did find the goats !!! LOL I promise that on my next visit I WILL FIND THE WAY!!(even if I have to buy a machete and clear me own path).
Cave? Which cliffs? Come wid ie noh!!
