I'm familar with route taxi's except in TB. I'm staying in Calabash. Do route taxi's run on the "ocean" road to Great Bay? What about to Fort Charles or Billy's Bay? What about Junction and points east? If I see the red licence plate and the destination near the wheel well, what are the rates if I stay within TB? Do I point my arm and finger up 45º or down? If you think this is not the proper forum, feel free to send me a private email. It's time I educate myself about this aspect of transportation. I'm not at all interested in getting to/from MoBay but I'd like all the other information you can give. Thanks.

taxis's run to billys bay and fort charles they also run to great bay, if they are going the direction you want just wave your arm and ask if they can carry you to where ever you would like, they call it hailing a taxi.

between Tb and Billy´s or Fort Charles are not very many taxis around ... the best would be if you had some telephone numbers of drivers who are willing to pick you up and who would drive the Fort Charles Road. Drivers are keen on taking the main roads as they can make more money on them. I think it would be a good road for a driver if he´d serve the Fort Charles Road between TB and Black River as there are many locals who use it every day and who have to walk really far before they can stop a taxi

I'm not too concerned with getting around anywhere in Jamaica as there always seems to be a taxi one can hire or charter, but I was wondering about how/where the route taxi's in TB work. I'm still hopeful that the donkey taxi idea gets off the ground.

Route taxis generally don't take 'the back road' through Billy's Bay/Fort Charles to Black River but the main roads with taxis often best caught at Heart of Love bakery. The back road is shorter, but the road often potholey so care is necessary and driving best not done at night since you'd be far from anywhere... Like Turkish dolmus/stuffed taxis, the cab isn't exclusively yours but stops to pick up anybody en route as long as there's room. You pay by how far you are going. The bus plaza/square in Black River is the usual destination from TB with other route taxis
headed from Black River to Sav as the next stop, and then from Sav to Negril or MoBay. Via route taxi, you can get there from here....but a private driver is faster and also, if PPV certified, insured should any accident happen.
Consider your well-being on the road more important than how cheap the fare is.

Since the topic is at hand, out of curiosity, how much does cab fare run? Give me an idea from something which you've experienced. i.e. "I went from blank to blank and paid blank." It would give us a ball park figure to go on should we need to hail a cab.

I've never taken a route taxi before. Not even here! :-)
