Hurricane Ivan took away the entire Treasure Beach Women’s Group craft house and meeting center.

Thanks to the generous donations of Erik MacPeek and Janet Nichols, who brought their building team to Treasure Beach, the Women’s craft house is well on it’s way to being finished!

The original 15’ by 26’ wooden structure is beginning replaced with a 40’ by 40’ block and concrete, hurricane-proof structure to include two medical examining rooms, a kitchen, office, thrift shop, huge meeting room and of course a craft shop.

The American building team of Nicholas Gencarelle,
Erik MacPeek, David Olive, Robert Schacht and Alex
Slater donated their precious time and skills working along with a Jamaican team for seven
straight days. The walls seemed to grow as fast as the surrounding weeds! The roof and the finishing touches are all that is needed.

Additional thanks must be given to:

Axel Wiesterich of Mar Blue for drawing up the
architectural plans for the house as well as donating the plumbing and electrical labor costs.

Axel's parents for donating the tiles for the flooring.

Lisa Ginzel for generously donating funds, herself and her extremely capably crew
for the entire week to work alongside the American building team. Their advise on
how things are done "the Jamaican way" was invaluable.

Lyric for donating a week's stay for the American
building crew.

Treasure Tours for donating transportation for the
crew.

All the private donations of cash and kind, with special thanks to the Bert and Marie Nywening and Harry and Ethel Wiersma for their generosity.

All the women of TBWG who worked overtime on this
project: submitting grants and further fund raising activities, to be on-site helping with
whatever was needed, and for cooking up great lunches and keeping the crew well fed.

The following are some photos of the progress being made.

On Friday night the Treasure Beach Women's Group hosted a wonderful thank you party! The food was plentiful and delicious, and the music had everyone clapping and dancing!

This was truly a team effort which has paid off with tremendous headway being made in replacing the TBWG house with something even better,
turning from a craft center into a community/health center.

We ask for your continued support in this project as we still have a ways to go before the final shingle is hung.

I went to see the new Women's Group the other day as I had heard such incredible things about it and to be honest when I saw it I couldn't believe my eyes. It was incredible. I had been speaking with one of the women from the women's group who told me that when she saw it she cried, so I had to see it for myself. What a remarkable example of kindness and generousity from the team from the US who put up this great structure in a week. We are very fortunate in Treasure Beach to have these kinds of people coming to stay in our little neck of the woods and they have set such a huge standard for 'giving'. We Jamaican's sometimes forget to 'give' to strangers but these people have reminded us how important it is. The people that most appreciate this new addition to the community don't have access to the internet but I speak for them when I tell you that they are over the moon with what has been accomplished. So on behalf of all of Treasure Beach we can't thank you enough for your dedication, kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity. Bravo!!!!

I am amazed that they could put that structure up in one week, why does it take our Jamaicans months
to just build just the foundation.

Great jobs folks you showed us people abroad how we can build for less.

Natives of TB I love you and you all must keep loving others.God Bless and see you all soon.
Now I have to figure out what to give as a House warming gift when I get there.I will leave the ladies to ponder what will be best, so bye for now.

If you haven't done so already, please check out Dave's photos in the photo gallery which have captured the progress of the rebuilding of the Women's Center for one week. These photos are just wonderful and entertained all of us on the Friday night party hosted by the Women's Group.

Thanks so much for sharing them with us all Dave!

T’was the Sunday before Christmas and all through our town
1
Volunteers were roof casting, and not with a frown
2
Cement buckets were filled, by the ladders with care
3
In hopes that the roof, “soon come” and be there .
4

Thank you to all who have made it possible for us to come this far, so quickly.

By chance I came across The Women's Group news.
I would like to recieve more information on the Group.
Right now I am involved in www.capetocapepartnership.org

We have adopted a village for life. We are having a art auction to help pay for the construction of a pre-school for the cildren of the village. AIDS has devastated the village.
The art auction takes place in Provincetown, Ma, USA. April 29th, 2006.

I have stayed in Treasure Beach over 10 years ago. There are many people there from Provincetown. John Yingling is a home owner there, and lives here also.
If any artist would like to send a work of art to our auction that would be great.
I would also like to get involved in your Women's Group.
I am an artist, and lifelong volunteer. I hope to make another trip to Treasure Beach, as soon as finances allow.

Please let me know what some of your needs are.
thank you
