TB.Net is Saying Farewell

Treasure Beach Forum: TB Runnin's: TB.Net is Saying Farewell
Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By TBNet on Monday, June 01, 2015 - 10:22 am: Edit Post

It is with mixed emotions that we (Rebecca & Eric) announce TB.Net will be closing down as of July 1, 2015. After several discussions, we have decided it is time the current TB.Net close up shop and allow the next generation of technology and people to carry the torch.

It has been an honor to run this website. We would like to take a moment to sincerely thank you, our advertisers and readers, for your support over the last 16 years. TB.Net always tried to show anyone visiting the site that Treasure Beach is more than a wonderful vacation destination, but also a loving and caring community. Through TB.Net’s features; Profile of the Month, Lost to the Sea Memorial, What’s New, Birth, Death, Marriage, and Congratulations, the Community and History pages, --and, yes, especially the Forum-- we were able to offer our potential visitors a true feeling of the community they were about to visit. In short, it connected everybody who loves the area, both yardies and visitors alike.

Without you this site would never have been able to help sponsor various events and fund-raising activities, such as the Hook n’ Line Fishing Tournament, the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, the Children’s Christmas Party, the Sandy Bank Primary School Literacy Program, hurricane relief programs, and so much more.

We know TB.Net will be missed. However, through Facebook and other social media and websites, folks seeking information on Treasure Beach will still have plenty of resources. The Treasure Beach cluster group has plans to create a TB website in the near future. Sports Park news can be found on http://treasurebeach.tumblr.com/. www.southcoastjamaica.net is new and highlights Treasure Beach and the South Coast. And, of course, you can check in with the Treasure Tours Facebook page for updates and photos of Treasure Beach activities.

In conclusion, we again want to thank you for your support over the last 16 years. We believe TB.Net has in some small way made this a better community uniting us all whether you’re a yardie, part of the TB diaspora, frequent visitor, or first time guest. We wish continued success for each of you. Thank you for helping this community remain the best in all of Jamaica!

We are currently in the process of putting the domain name www.treasurebeach.net up for sale. So if you’re sad about not having a place to talk about Treasure Beach, now would be a great time to set something up yourself. Please notify us if you are interested.

-Rebecca & Eric

I cannot believe it has been 16 years! What a ride!! I feel so blessed to have been a partner with Eric on TB.Net.

This website has opened so many doors for me to be welcomed into so many lives, homes, celebrations and sorrows. Back in the day before Facebook, smartphones, Whats App and Instagrams I know many times I was invited to celebrations because folks wanted me to take photos and post them on the site. In the process I would get a firsthand and personal glimpse into many TB families and I will cherish those times.

I especially loved taking photos of the various persons highlighted on Profile of the Month. I heard some wonderful stories and met some truly amazing persons many of whom are gone now making our time together even more precious.

My TB.Net connection allowed me to get more involved with the Sandy Bank Primary and Basic Schools covering the many events, sports days, Jamaica days, graduations, Christmas Concerts, and even though this was not directly connected to TB.Net I will never forget my time driving the “Magic School Bus” for the football and cricket teams.

Hurricane Ivan was one of the most trying times for this community in the history of my being here. It was during this time Eric and I both realized how important the site was for keeping people in touch with each other. I will never forget my friend Lisa and I driving up to Munro because we heard you could get phone signal there and as soon as we saw the bars come on the phone I called Eric. The hours we spent tracking persons and reporting in to Eric and Mair helping to chart out all the names and post information was incredible. I drove to Belmont as soon as I heard they had electricity and Internet connections and my friends Mary and Essau let me use their lines. We had to walk through and over packed up furniture to get to the connection but we got through and I was able to send out photos to Eric. Then a few days later RBTT Bank in Black River had electricity and Internet and graciously allowed me to sit there for hours sending out photos. To this day if I go back on the site to that time and start reading the hundreds of comments it brings tears to my eyes.

Two of my favorite events of the year are the Hook n’ Line and the Christmas Tree Lighting. These are the two events where more of the entire community of Treasure Beach comes out than any other event. It is so wonderful to see everyone catching up with each other’s lives especially at Christmas time when so many who live abroad are home for the holidays. I loved it when folks would come up to me and ask me to take their photo because they wanted their family to see them on TB.Net.

The most poignant moment for my connection with TB.Net was establishing the Lost at Sea section of the website. For about a month each and every day I would get a phone call or be stopped on the road and told the story of someone who had been lost at sea. It was during this time I truly understood the grief this community had experienced over the years and it made me understand why this was such a tight knit community. I remember telling Eric at the end that I had never cried so often in my life as every story was heart wrenching and so many men were gone too soon. From this the memorial services were held at Sunset Resort and I am so appreciative to Kory South for sponsoring these memorials. So many persons came to me at the end of these services and told me how this was the only memorial service they had for their loved one and only then did they feel a sense of closure. I am eternally grateful for modern communication which has prevented the list of the men and women lost at sea to not be expanding as it did before.

And we cannot forget about the Forum. Most of the time both Eric and I were proud to have a place persons could voice their opinions, share ideas, connect or reconnect with family and friends, help out where there was need and keep in touch with the ‘runnin’s’ of Treasure Beach. But alas there were times when that Forum was the bane of our existence. I have to be honest I’m not sure neither Eric nor I will miss that part of TB.Net and I am sure there are some of you out there who will not miss our [edited by TB.Net].

Working with Eric as my partner on TB.Net has been a wonderful experience. I know we tried and tested each other from time to time but what has developed and will remain is a strong and lasting respect and friendship. And for that I am truly grateful.

One of the proudest moments of my life was the day I became a Jamaican citizen and to this day whenever I tell someone I am a Jamaican I have to smile. But I have to say what makes me even more proud is to say I am a part of this very unique and special community of Treasure Beach. When folks ask me where is home, there is no hesitation in my answer. Treasure Beach is my home and I hope to call this home for the rest of my life. Thank you to each and every one of you who have helped to make TB.Net so special but even more thanks for accepting me into this very blessed place we call home.

P.S. Please note TB.Net is not connected to Treasure Tours. Treasure Tours is still alive and well and will probably prosper more now that I will have more time to dedicate to it. Friend us on Facebook and keep in touch!

Well, this site served a purpose, but the censorship dampened the lively exchange on the forum to the point where nothing was happening. I will miss what it used to be, not what it has become, except for Rebecca's pictures.

Lets take some bets and a challenge: I bet until the end of this site, this may become the longest thread ever. And there have been somelong ones! The challenge is for each of us to tell their favorite Tb.net moment. Oh my gosh, I have several! Both happy and pissed off! Lets enjoy, and laugh as though this is a funeral.

This website is historic and played an integral role in the life of Treasure Beach and surrounding areas. Although in recent times I have not been visiting the site like I used to yet, it stands out as unique and as close to home as I can imagine.Just seeing post from people I grew up with, went to school with, getting sounds of issues evolving locally, nationally or just reflections from Dem good Ole Days gives TB.Net a uniqueness yet a familiarity that is captured not even on Facebook in my Opinion.
My heartiest gratitude to Rebecca and Eric for a priceless contribution.

Hello mnken, choked on any NY steak recently? I believe this thread could become the longest, except that the traffic has been sparse, but we shall see! When I first came to this site I was elated, but that soon changed, boom, boom I was broad-sided twice, and what could have been never materialised. It was OK while it lasted. Still hope to meet you one of these days.
Hello Native, I hope to meet you again, one day soon I hope!

What am I going to do now? I have hopped in and out of this site for the longest time as I love Treasure beach after staying there several times over the years.

I have not been able to visit JA for a few years so visiting the site kept me informed of my favourite place.

By coincidence I thought I would check in to see what's been happening prior to my planned visit later this year only to find the site is closing down!

I wanted to join a boat in the Hook N Line Tournament (got my own gear!) this year. So if any Captain wants an extra pair of hands contact me, please :-) I have done it before in 2008.

I will miss this site greatly, good luck in your new ventures. Goodbye from England

This website is up to my favorit list on my computer since the beginning and it will remain like this also in my heart because you Rebecca and Eric and all the people who are a part of the forum had made a wonderful job. I wish to thank you very much for the nice feelings you gave me always.

The places of Treasure Beach itself have changed over the years and I hope the village will keep to be an authentic, charming and relaxing place in Jamaica.

All my gratitude and respect to Rebecca for her actions and I know she has a lots to do still...Keep on my friend and see you again.

TB Addict I am sure the experience would have been better if everyone could have been recognized, to me this is the saddest part of the site. It is unfortunate it is going to be closed. I wish someone, with a more tolerant view of sometimes contentious exchanges, would take it over, and use it to bring all the TB people scattered abroad, together.

It is not too musch to expect respect when exchanging different opinions. I (this is Jeanie, here) am sometimes guilty of engaging my vocal muscle before I put my mind into thoughtful gear. But in a public, computer aged format, a more sensitive and generous approach must be enacted. We all have had a chance to proof read our messages befor sending through to TB.net. I personally like a lively and diverse discussion, but we gotta be nice! As a former counselor and a parent of sometimes squabbly kids, it is tiring and aggravating to feel like you gottabe a referee before somebody gets feelings hurt.

Dear Rebecca and Eric,

It's taken me this long to truly grasp the significance of TB.net disappearing. I've read it since the beginning. While I sometimes complained about your "edits," I also realize that the community would have been much worse off without this site, especially the Forum. Whatever you chose to change or delete was done based upon your love and respect for the community of Treasure Beach.

Maintaining and posting things on this site--on a daily basis--for 16 years--has been an extraordinary effort, and I applaud you for all you have done.

Without your work--and it is definitely work--hundreds of families would not have been helped through major hurricanes (Ivan and Dean) that damaged Treasure Beach so badly. Without your assistance, Treasure Beach Foundation could not possibly have raised sufficient funds to provide scholarships for 30+ deserving TB students (scholarships that are still ongoing).

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for caring--and for turning that profound caring into meaningful actions.

Bless you.

Well as the saying goes, "cow don't know the use of his tail until it's gone"
Rebecca and Eric thank you both so much for your dedication and commitment over the years. You will be missed. Rebecca-words cannot explain how comforting it had been during a hurricane to be able to log on from a far and be able to get updates, status when the phone lines are down and we have no other way of knowing how our dear TB weathered the storm. You on more than one occasion went outside the community just so you could upload pics etc, or update Eric and he update us all. You guys were/are truly a god sent.
May you both be blessed with a a healthy and prosperous life. One Love!

It's impossible to say how important this site has been in building and maintaining the TB community. I can say, with confidence, that it has been immensely important to building and maintaining the visitor community. I can only hope the visitor community is welcomed and valuable to the TB community, but am equally certain of how welcome and valuable the TB community is to us.
Actually, I think we are good together.

Thanks TB.net, Rebecca, Eric, posters, and arguers. See you on the beach.

Segueing to Facebook? You don't need to respond because everyone except me probably knows the answer. I will find it out without troubling you.

To our Addicts and 'regular' fans alike, we say a big Thank You for your kind words. They are very appreciated. But, sadly, we are not the ones who will continue to be the place for web-related information about Treasure Beach and Jamaica. We've been at it for 16 years and, quite frankly, we're worn out. It is that simple. No politics, no one died, no hidden agenda.

Who will be the one(s) to carry on with the mission of presenting accurate and positive information about Treasure Beach? There's no secret formula to it, just some tech knowledge, hard work and dedication. Same as any other successful project.

So, who's up for the challenge? Who's going to see what today's social media and advanced web techniques can do to positively shape Treasure Beach's online presence?

-TBNet
