Our friends in Kingston tell us how bad the "chica" fever is there. How are we doing in TB?

A few folks have gotten it but not near as bad as Kingston. I guess this is a time we are grateful for the drought.

Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so people are making an effort to get rid of any of it. And Treasure Beach has much less standing water--and is much cleaner than other parts of the island such as Kingston.

We just came back from a few weeks in Treasure Beach, took ordinary precautions, and we're fine.

Be certain to bring mosquito repellent, and apply it during the day, not only at dawn and dusk, because the Chik-V mosquitoes (just like the ones that carry dengue) tend to bite during the day. I'd suggest a repellent with DEET--and perhaps one with picaridin if you are concerned about dissolving nail polish or furniture lacquer.

Also, sitting under a fan or in a breeze is a perfect way to keep mosquitoes off you.

I'd suggest you bring some repellent in your carry-on for quick access, but remember the "three ounce or under" rule. Plenty of brands (e.g., Deep Woods Off) come in small containers.

Also, IF you get it--and you really probably won't--be sure you have a pain medication/fever reducer with you. The residents told me that something like Tylenol (Panadol) is better than ibuprofen, but I couldn't find anything to this effect through research.

Take your vacation--and enjoy yourselves.

I understand that carnivorous plants are perfect for trapping mosquitoes as a long term solution eg, Venus Flytrap and Sundew Plant. These predatory plants are so clever! If you Google carnivorous plants there are quite a few. I don't know which ones are suited to our local climate though.
