I've started this new tread since the others are getting full.

Let's use this to discuss reported damage to Jamaica and TB.

This was posted on Jamiacans.com at 10:30 EST:
Just heard a live report from Ja on radio 106 FM via WPAT, NY. As most of you know by now at 7pm yesterday the hurricane changed it's course and shifted westerly instead of passing directly over the island. As a result:
-The west coast if taking a pounding
-Many homes have lost their roofs, particularly in Mandeville
-There is severe flooding in central and western Jamaica
-At 8am the hurricane was 60 miles south of Montego Bay, and -Black River is taking a serious hit
-It will be passing over Negril some time later

There are some reports coming through on www.stormcarib.com. At least one from this morning, but I cannot tell where in JA he is reporting from. It doesn't sound good, but it doesn't report casualties, thank God.

Some reports currently coming in to Miyard.com from people in Negril. From those reports, sounds like Negril is doing OK.

The Weather Channel just reported two confirmed deaths in Jamaica, a 17 year old female in Old Harbour and a 75 year old woman, no location given.

After reading on MiYard.com (see above link) that land lines are still intact in Negril, I tried calling TB but got a message saying 'due to the hurricane in the area you are calling, your call cannot be placed'.

Jamaicans.com has a thread for reports from St. Elizabeth. There's not much info in it yet, though.

I hope we hear something soon from down there.

I am unaware of any word from anyone on the south coast including TB, Alligator Pond, Black River, etc.

We're all waiting to hear from people there.

The Gleaner has a couple of news stories: http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20040910/index.html

Nothing about St. Elizabeth that I saw.

In addition, there are reports of 5 dead in Jamaica. No details.

In its Saturday 11PM EST Update Jampact.org is reporting...

"JPSCo (Jamaica Power company) is preparing to restore power to several areas. They are asking the public to please disconnect any emergency power generators connected to breaker boxes or electrical outlets. They are also asking for breaker panel main switches to be moved to the off position, in order to protect electrical appliances. The JPS may be reached at 888-225-5577."
and
"There has been no significant damage at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, and services are expected to resume at 6am tomorrow morning. The cellular and landline networks seem to be mostly up, and callers are getting through. The Manchester and St. Elisabeth telephone trunk lines are down until further notice. Free text messaging is being offered to Digicel customers. Cable & Wireless customers will have free text messaging until 6am on Monday. Electricity may not be resumed in all areas for several weeks.

STELIZABETHDREAD on Jamaicans.com has a report from the brother of a man on the ground "half way between Treasure Beach and Ft. Charles". Note that its in patois. The essence is that there's heavy damage such as numbers of trees and electrical lines down, road destruction, 2 feet of standing water, and the loss of at least animial life,

Note that he says his brother ran his cell phone on his car battery and will call again tomorrow morning, indicating that some cell phones are working in some part of the area.

Let's hope others can use their phones to contact us as well.

Thank you all so much for your posts, you have no idea the comfort it has given me. My daughter attends school at Treasure Beach, all the students were evacuated safely but I had not heard the status of the staff that stayed behind at the school. We have not heard from the students in mandeville either since 7am yesterday morning. Thank you so much. My prayers and my love to all my friends and family that I have made at TB these past 2 years. I will be waiting deligently for any news.

has anyone hear anything about calabash bay?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By TBNet on Sunday, September 12, 2004 - 10:47 am: Edit Post

As of 11:30 AM Sunday morning, threre's not much new that I could find.

I've recieved some emails with tidbits of reports about roofs off in Mandeville, trees down, etc. We're asking for anyone with ANY information related to PLEASE post it here if. For some, this is the only source they have to know what's going on.

Does anyone have a connection to the Power 106 broadcasts? If so, post the information here or send it directly to me at webmaster@treasurebeach.net

What we do know:

There seems to be sporadic phone service working in the Mandeville/TB area. However, when I called Rebecca's land line, I get 'All circuits are busy'. Her CWJ cell phone is accepting voice mails, but her Digicell phone simply states "the number you've dialed is unavailable."

The Los Angeles Times:
"The Jamaican death toll included two children who drowned near Kingston and a family of four who died in south-central Clarendon, said Sgt. Steve Brown of the Jamaican Police Force emergency response center. He also said a family of eight was missing from a flooded area west of Kingston. RJR Radio also reported that an elderly woman died when a tree fell on her home."

On Jamaicans.com,:
"I have spoken to my mother a few times in the Malvern,Munro,Southfield area of St. Elizabeth via her cell phone. She is telling me that she is fine, but all the houses that she can see around her is destroyed. She says there are no trees standing. The last time i spoke to her was about 7:00 pm eastern time (Saturday) and she said the winds were dying down, but the rain is relentless...things are a bit hectic for her because water is entering the house through some windows and doors. she did say that Treasure beach and Junction were hit pretty bad. I try to talk for a little bit at a time because her cell phone is going to die and she has no means to recharge. Funny thing is I just left the island on Monday."

Again, if you have ANY information, no matter how small, pelase post it here along with where and when you heard it.

http://www.jampact.org/

Some info available, but not much. It says Manchester & St. Elizabeth telephone "trunk lines" are down.

My guess is people have no way to charge cell phone batteries unless they think to use a car charger.

I've got thru to voice mail, but that's about it.

I just keep telling myself - No news is good news...

There's bits of info coming in from http://stormcarib.com/reports/2004/jamaica.shtml:

"I have just spoken to my sister in Santa Cruz [located to the north of TB]]. The cell phones are back. Severe damage in Santa Cruz area and Goshen so far as she can see. She is on her way to the south. Lots of homes without roofs but people are helping each other. No mention of flooding but most light poles down and they were driving from Santa Cruz in a SE direction. She said that Goshen is very badly damaged. "

I have learned from good source that news about Johhny Forest's death is untrue. That's good news. If anyone learns anything about people in Bluntas, Newell, Bethany, and Bigwoods, please post.
Many Thanks

Just heard from Calabash Bay! No one dead, thank God, but the sea is up to Burn's Guest house! The Fisherman's Co OP, all of the shacks, all of the fishing storage lockers, GONE!

The floor of Mrs. Gardiner's dropped out.

The men who lived on that beach lost all they had, their home, their belongings.

Description is of total disaster, from that small area. Sorry to say, couldn't get more info, cell phone battery was weak.
