We have been without electricity for about 2 hours. Fortunately we still have phone service, but I am hearing reports of phone lines down everywhere. It is strangely calm here right now. Hardly any breeze and the sea has calmed down. What is happening is the wind is shifting direction as the storm is nearing. The sea is coming more from the northwest and the wind is following the same direction. This will change once the eye passes us when the sea and wind will, once again, come from the southeast.

Everybody, including myself and my friend Lisa by my side, are nestled in their homes and waiting, albeit with lots of apprehension.

The news reports are still saying it will hit around midnight and it is creeping along the south coast heading west.

Thank you all so much for your support. I can't tell you how much it means to all of us here!

I will continue to update you as long as I have phone service.

The winds are really picking up now, but very little rain. I would guess the winds are about 50 mph at this time, with gusts of about 70 - 90.

It's just starting!

Keep sending those prayers and postive vibes!

This page from JamPact is reporting intermittant phone and internet connections to Jamaica from New York and has confirmed the earlier prediction of 6 meter (20 feet) waves. In addition, they say that the "the eye is now making its closest pass to land, by the area of Alligator Pond," which is approximately 25km (15 miles) to the west/northwest

Stay safe!

Fortunately for me, I use an Internet Phone (IP Phone otherwise knows as VoIP Phone) and because it uses the internet to carry the voice signal where ever possible, calling Jamaica is not a major problem at this time. As long as we have internet access we can call without having to compete for "space" in the regular telephone network. Of course, cell phones circuits in Jamaica get very busy for any service at this time but my chances of getting throungh is that much greater using the internet phone. I am in Toronto and the IP phone company I use us http://www.vonage.ca

Hi Rebecca, Lancel, Polly, and everyone at Treasure Beach

We are all praying for you here in Toronto. We have just heard that the storm sideswiped the island. Hope everything is ok.

I'm starting to see some news reports of where Ivan has been, but have not heard anything from people on the ground as to what conditions are. The last reports are that the electricity was cut yesterday in an effort to minimize damage from downed lines and to the electrical grid itself, so my guess is that Rebecca won't be able to check in anytime soon.

If you have any information or links to web sites with such, PLEASE post them here.

The good news is that the path has been very close to Charley's meaning Ivan did NOT come ashore and therefore spared the island from the most dangerous winds the surrounding the eye.

The flip side to this is that its the south and west coasts that are bearing the brunt of the storm.

For those of you sitting out of harm's way wondering what you can do, there are several sites that are accepting donations for disaster relief:
Gleaner & Jamaica National Building Society
A good list of various agencies on Jamaicans.com
Jampact

Treasure Beach & Jamaica, you are not alone! Help will arrive soon.

Hello Rebecca,

We know that you are very busy, and God knows we appreciate you. We have been trying all night and this morning to make contact with our grandmother in Billys Bay; Mazie Moxam, we did speak with her several times yesterday, and last had contact with her around 8:30 a.m. Please as soon as it is safe for you to move around, and access the damages, we would appreciate (although we know you will)provide us with up dates. We are presently hearing that Black River is severly damage.

Even though we (Cayman Islands)will be the next stop for Ivan; our thoughts are focused on our family, relatives and friends in Treasure Beach.

Thank you and may God continue to bless you and the people of Treasure Beach.
