There's a new Learning Centre in Billy's Bay!

Spearheaded by the Treasure Beach Women's Group, supported by the Billy's Bay Gospel Chapel (through the generous use of their building) and initially staffed by volunteers, the Centre is a great hit with children in the community.

The focus of the Learning Centre is to provide local children with fun activities that enhance their learning and to engage local parents and family members in supporting their children's educational success.

An average of 12-20 children between the ages of 2 1/2 and 12 attend each Saturday. Local teens contribute their time to support the younger children's learning.

Each week, the program consists of group "circle" time, where we sing, do finger-plays and introduce new learning materials. After that, older children spend time practicing their reading skills, before joining the younger ones who participate in early learning activities. Each session ends with some songs and a snack.

Donations of time, money and materials will assure that the program continues to be a valuable addition to the community.

This is wonderful. I'm always impressed with what the Women's Group is working on.

This is great for keeping the children interested in learning whilst having fun and enjoying themselves.I may be able to bring some board games on my next visit. Please let me know if these are needed.

Beth, YES! Board games would be a great addition to the materials we have! Games that can be played by multiple ages at one time, such as ones where players count to move around the board (like Chutes and Ladders or Sorry) or move through the board using colors (like Candyland) would allow young and older children play together. Games that are only good for older children would be great as well. We have children between the ages of 2 1/2 and about 12, so almost any board game would be welcome. Thanks so much for considering a contribution!
