Treasure Beach Forum: TB Runnin's: Funds for Literacy Teacher Needed for Sandy Bank Primary School for 2014

Two years ago TB.Net received a request from the Sandy Bank Primary School for funding for a remedial teacher to teach literacy to a group of students aged 11-12 years of age who have for many reasons failed to learn to read and write.

Thanks to matching funds donated by several persons we have able to fund a remedial teacher through 2013. We (TB.Net) were very pleased to see the results of this program. (You can read the initial request and last year's update.)

Irene Nemhard sent us the following information regarding the success of the 2013 program:
"Hi all, this is an update on the achievements of the remedial teacher over the year 2013. The teacher has become a vital part of Sandy Bank Primary school's remedial work. Sandy Bank Primary School believes that every child can be a reader. Children who are having difficulty learning to read or who read below their age level are identified by all the teachers at the beginning of the school year. Then they are taken out of their class several times for the week and taught either one to one or in small groups of 2 or 3 children.

Miss Jacintha Jackson Brown, the teacher funded jointly by your contributions and Treasure Beach.net, is one of two teachers who works with these children. This ensures that all the children in grades 1 to 3 who need this extra help receive it. Miss Jacintha also plays a key role in the school's library. Children come to the library at lunch time and Miss Jacintha will help them choose a book to read. Her role has now become an essential part of the excellent remedial work that is done in the school. This is repetitive work that requires great patience and understanding which Miss Jacintha brings to her role.

Jacintha taught remedial literarcy to 18-24 children. The remedial work as a whole in the school is much more extensive; I would estimate that 60 children receive remedial assistance through Mrs Taylor, Miss Tatti, Miss Ore and Miss Jacintha's combined efforts."

Therefore, TB.Net would like to again put a challenge forward to anyone reading this who would like to donate towards keeping this program going. TB.Net will match all funds donated up to a total of US$500. So donate now and we will match your donation. Any and all contributions will be greatly appreciated, whether large or small. Every mikkle makes a mukkle.

Our aim is to continue to employ a part time trained literacy teacher at a cost of $15,000 Jamaican dollars per month (US $174.00) to concentrate on this group of students.
