Wondering why Treasure Beach doesn't have a cemetery. Does any town in Jamaica have one? Tombs in peoples' yards is interesting but wouldn't a local burial area be a good idea for all families/religions/property values?
Yes Roger there are cemeteries in every main town in Jamaica.Just a stone's throw away in Black River(Logwood area) there is one for the people of the town to bury their dead.Take a tour of its environs and you will see what I mean. They may be neighbours but there are customary differences. The people of Treasure Beach bury their loved ones in their yard;bearing in mind that property in some of these areas has traditionally been passed down from one generation to the next, sharing your yard with your ancestors has never been an issue only to those less acquainted with the practice.
I have often wondered about the same thing Roger. I understand your position on tradition Beth but we must consider that each successive generation inherits a smaller homestead. What to do when the inherited land is eventually too small for a burial plot?
This may not go down well with the squeamish, but you may be surprised to find out that there was in fact a cemetery in Treasure Beach, and you might have slept at popular guest house that now occupies the land that was the cemetery.
The good thing is that there was never any negative reports of any haunting at this place.....
Here we go again.
There is no land available for such.
Which guest house, Calabash Man?
Roger and anyone else who is interestead in the history of Treasure beach.I know there was a (COMMUNIAL BURIAL GROUND)Some of my ancestors were buried there.It was lost to one of society more affluent person, even thogh my family and others objected to their "TAKE OVER" {edited by TBNet}
Now the only way to keep sacred the beliefs, love and respect, for our deceased loved ones is to bury them on family plots. THAT IS A FACT.
As an original TBite meex, I must respectfully disagree with you about the availability of land. Plenty of land lies vacant in TB. Take a hike along the foothills of Great Bay for example and you will see what I mean. All we need is a little local government assistance to provide us with roadways.
Thank you Angler,Meex, back then in the days people bury the dead in front of their houses it is about time dead be buried in a cemetery.
Let's get the roadways leading to the hillside ready then. Since no one really wants to go and live in the Great Bay hills (I am assuming) then it would be a great idea to have a cemetery in that area. At least the dead would be away from the hum-drum and bustle of it all. In other words, they could rest in peace by the quiet hillside.
no thanks not in great bay why not treasure beach
Reaman I thought Great Bay was a part of Treasure Beach. I am sorry for the misunderstanding. Could you explain to me which area is referred to as Treasure Beach. The Treasure Beach you are talking about, is it Pedro Plains?
Dont even start about which district belong to treasure beach we been there before, there is no official document to prove which is which if you feel like saying you from treasure beach its ok whatever you choose ,why not each community has its own cemetery .
Treasure Beach refers to the postal area, and is comprised of many districts, so if your district falls within that area you are in Treasure Beach. Great Bay is one of these districts.
Maybe Tony James could donate a piece of his property to the community.
Thanks for your response Calabash Man. I can see that you are a rational thinking person.
Interesting discussion. I do not totally understand the tradition of burying family on family land. If it is because of distrust of "the man", I get that. It seems that if a suitable area could be designated, donated and maintained....and respected, it might allow the ever shrinking family plots to be either divided an extra time or sold at some point.
I will talk to Tony James.
There is always cremation. Best way to go out in stye.
My two cents. Treasure beach derived from the treasure beach hotel built by a Canadian back in the day(maybe 1960's) which is at Frenchman beach. Its been adopted to encompass the three bays and now even more, not sure how many more but its great for tourism and such a nice title and makes no difference any ways, yard is a Treasure. 1 Love all

It is only a matter of time until residents realize the dire need of a cemetery; it is simply common sense. I do think anyone owning a sizeable property with passable roadway would be wise to think of this idea as a worthwhile investment. The alternative is for the government to step up and donate the land for the public good.
As a side thought to Thought's comments above, it is not that no one wants to live in them there hills. The problem is that those properties are off the main road and are practically unapproachable during the rainy season because of the ponds that separate them from the road. Perhaps something as simple as a culvert would make a big difference.
