I was just told that the new welcome to treasure beach is almost ready. I think that its a waste of money. Treasure beach won the best community award and this is what the money was put towards. What they should have done is do something for the community. How is that boat going to benefit the community of treasure beach? The one that was there before rot to pieces and grass grow up and cover it up and a fig tree growing in the middle of the boat. The canteen at the primary school needs fixing that what they should put the money towards atleast we the citizens and parents can say our children benefits.or put it towards the ambulance funds. What happen to the persons that got into the accident in the ambulance are they OK now? Last thing I hear they didn't get anything from the insurance what is happening? Its almost an year now we the community members needs to know what is going on with the ambulance. We Need to hear from Breds with updates

I agree. What about providing scholarships to students and as a contingency clause, the students sign that after their 4 years they must do community service for the community for 1 year? Community service could be in the form of creating new business for TB or teaching literacy, etc. Come on BREDS! xo

I agree. EEEEEdyat ting dat.

What is the return on investment for this welcome sign? Would it be smarter to use some of the funds for a more 'permanent' metal or stone painted sign and have funds left to put towards another project? Who is the person that makes the decision on how the funds will be used?

I invite everyone to post their ideas as to how the money could be better spent.

I do not live in TB, but am a regular visitor and I am very disappointed that money was spent on the welcome boat, when they still haven't raised enough money for a new ambulance. Seems like they are trying to please tourists over the actual citizens of the community!

Can't agree with you guys more, all they need is a nice big welcome sign that's what they use here in the US not boats. The roads are in need of repair badly.

Although I understand many of the points you are making I think it should be pointed out that the cost for this project was very small as most of the goods and services were donated.

Personally, I love the Welcome Boat idea and I think it is a great representation of the fishing village of Treasure Beach and the warm welcome folks receive when visiting.

I love the idea of scholarships, a new ambulance, better roads, fixing up the canteen at the Primary School and I can think of many more worthy projects to be done. But not one of these projects would cost a small amount of money or require a small amount of time and effort. Just ask Karen Kennedy how much time, effort and funding went into the scholarship funds she oversaw. And as far as the roads go, I already pay a great deal for road repair every month. It's called taxes.

I am all for worthy causes and I challenge those who have mentioned these causes to start working on gathering what they need to work towards solutions to these issues. But I am also for the beautification of our community and I feel this welcome boat maybe in a small way makes those of us who call Treasure Beach home a bit more proud of our home every time we pass it. And I hope it makes those who are visiting our community truly feel welcome as they pass it. Because without those visitors and those who live here all working together and enjoying each other we would not have such a wonderful community to live in.

When I first read this I chuckled, strangely enough not because I found it amusing but because I found the whole thing misplaced and very sad. Well said 'Concerned' and 'Dedicated Visitor', couldn't agree with you more. Was the community consulted for ideas on how the funds could be appropriately spent?

There is nothing wrong with the boat being there. Its a major improvement over all the bush that was there before. All communities need a landmark and this is a perfect landmark. What else could you use as a landmark for Treasure Beach, a goat or a kasha tree?

Consider that area a free road maintenance area. Wish there was landmarks all over so the roadsides would look better everywhere.

As a visitor of TB, I think both sides has a valid point.
Larger amounts of funds are needed for most projects.Projects that would have a bigger impact.
The boat and the small amount of money spend on it will also have a positive impact just because is a sort of a work of art, that makes people feel good, and proud of their community. Adds a small touch of beauty, to the already beautiful area.
ONE LOVE !!
Mike

[edited by TB.Net] I am not a member of this organisation, therefore does not know how or who decide how their money is spent. My problem with TB. is the poor condition of the roads, and this is where all NGOs should be focus right now.
otherwise a mural depicting our lifestyle and culture, like the BREADS logo would be more appealing.

Thank you to Captain Dennis for crafting another boat. I like coming down the hill, rounding the corner and seeing the boat. My only problem with it is that the old boat was not maintained and fell into disrepair and the grounds became overgrown. Not the best way to welcome in visitors. So, with that said...perhaps the organization who is responsible for making the boat will also see to it's continued maintenance.

Thanks for the editing TB.Net. I realise that I sometimes get carried away with my stinging and unnessaary remarks.

The roads are supposed to be funded by the government through the taxes I pay!

Call you representative and tell them come fix the roads!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By just saying on Friday, November 15, 2013 - 09:48 pm: Edit Post

Treasure Beach residents are not responsible for fixing roads. Just make sure you all vote in the right person next time to get that job done.

I never miss an opportunity to highlight the need for better roads in Treasure Beach. This topic is about the welcome boat, so I will not engage in any discussion about the representative, furthermore this site does not entertain political discussions. If anyone wants a political debate with me, read my comments about Venus and Serena coming to Treasure Beach in today's Observer. make your comments there. Then I will enlighten him or her.

Try to get the government to fix the roads first before bringing all those people in the community. Go to the higher top man in charge then since nothing is being done also keep the road way clear of overgrown bushes and trees.

Bad roads mean slow.

Bad roads mean only the serious come.

What's the rush?

What do you ride,

What do you drive,

Is it just poetry

Or is it just a fight?

Fix the roads

Watch the rain

Wash the work

Down the drain.

I can see both sides of this argument, but on my visit to TB last week, when we passed the boat, I knew we were "almost home." I like it.

There was a time

Before the lime

With flint in stones

The roads remain

No work for drain

No worry for rain.

Enough for fun and games.

Calabash man and student;

your poetry is not the best

of course I do not speak for the rest

but I for one

am enjoying reading what you have done!

Please don't tire,

and raise the other's ire

I eagerly await,

to check this for an update.

The boat has been docked! The base is still being worked on but doesn't the boat look fantastic?

Thanks to all involved and especially those who donated their time and skills to make this happen.

Great Job! Looking good! No worry Jamrock, hard shower a rain will only wash out the road, always leaves the side of the road intact. I predict the boat will last much longer than ANY stretch of the road near it.

Curious, below Nurse Henry's gate in that corner and above Lenny Moxam's gate.

Ithink that boat isn't turn the right way. When driving down the front of the boat seem to be blocking the coming vehicles. I don't think anybody from the parish council see that because there is no difference between that boat and the wall that is blocking the corner in Frenchman.

I really wonder if it's the people of treasure beach making these horrible remarks or it's us foreigners who leave treasure beach and never look back treasure beach is where it is now because of hard dedicating workers who love the community it's time to back off
