Umm. Sounds and looks a very interesting and comfortable place but what a name! "Beware of the Dogs"! Where did that come from?

Here is the explanation from the owners, Nico and Jana.

An incredibly well decorated villa in Pompeii, the house of the tragic poet, astonished historians and archaeologist for the number of exquisite mosaics and rich illustration of ancient mythology that it contained, it was strongly associated with the mosaic of a black dog at the very entrance with written
'Cave Canem' Latin for 'beware of the dog'.

The name Cave Canem started as a bit of a joke between me and my wife but the real inspiration came from Caesar & Susy, two beautiful large guard dogs belonging to our French neighbours, Caroline and Gilles.

During the construction the two dogs just went everywhere leaving their paw printed into the fresh cement in many floors and walkways around the house.

The other element to inspire us the name was the Treasure Beach soil, with his deep terra-cotta red colour, typical of the pottery and the classical colouring of Pompeii.

This red soil was sticking everywhere, blown by the constant breeze, driving all of us insane, especially the poor housekeeper Joan that was trying to keep this big and all whitewashed house clean. At one point we were going to give up and paint everything red out of desperation: one day whilst landscaping the grounds the wind decided to change direction, just for that one day in the year, so as the trucks started dropping additional red soil the wind pushed it up and it covering the house and pool. It took many days trying to get it all off the house and the result was often a pinkish-white colouring....

It is located in Billy's Bay. About a 5 minute drive from Jakes.
