Good Day,
A Sensitization Session has been organized with the Department of Cooperatives & Friendly Societies from the Ministry of Industry, Investment, and Commerce for Thursday, April 4th, 2013, 11:00am at the Treasure Beach Woman’s Group in Old Wharf, Treasure Beach.
The Idea is to form an Accommodation Cooperative for the Greater Treasure Beach Area. Within the Greater Treasure Beach area, from Black River to Great Bay, there are 77 operating accommodations. Forming a Cooperative will result in cheaper insurance, better products and services, higher level of standard, group or destination marketing and advertising, and to buy and use products stock and supplies at a cheaper rate, because team work makes it work.
Thanking You in advance.
Regards
St. Elizabeth Parish Development Committee.

Needless to say, this is a brilliant initiative in Treasure Beach community development. It's never too repetitive to be reminded of the Catechism of Co-op Principles, which our mothers and fathers drilled into us, so as to be responsible business and civic participants:
(1) Voluntary and Open Membership
(2) Democratic Member Control
(3) Member Economic Participation
(4) Autonomy and Independence
(5) Education, Training and Information
(6) Cooperation among Cooperatives
(7) Concern for Community

In the Internet age, when so much of our communications and organizing takes place on line, and changing economic customs place greater autonomy on self-interested groupings, intriguing variants of a co-operative society are floating into existence.
How about that tried and proven idea of a Sharing Economy (Share & Share Alike) that so often rears up, in many sectors, during difficult times.
In the co-operative idea of doing business with one another, one can even imagine regulated co-op lending, with steep reductions of the onerous lending rates that the local banks are charging, by pooling members' cash and establishing rate caps...but that's another story for another day.
Much success for the formation of this proposed Accommodations Co-op, and grant you the drive, energy, talents, management skills, good-will, and follow-through to see it to a booming success.
In the meanwhile, here are some encouraging stories of successes in the Sharing Economy:

Dear Saint Elizabeth Parish Council Development Commitee or anyone able to assist.
We have two rooms in our house that we are considering letting to guests from foreign or local.
We have a safe facility, water, sanitary conveniences and cooking facilities.
What do we have to do to satisfy the present requirements and start operating?
Looking forward to your advise.
i hope that everybody understands this very urgent need of a COOP!

Good Day,
I hope all is well.
Due to the fact that a number of Accommodation Owners will not be able to make it, and a South Coast Resort Board Meeting has been scheduled for the same day, I have asked the DCFS to reschedule the meeting to a later date.
The details will follow.
Here is a link to the DCFS Website: Department of Cooperatives and Friendly Societies.
