Hi All,

My name is Maya Feldman and I have been coming to Treasure Beach for the last three years, twice a year. Every time I come, I fall more and more in love with the community, which I truly believe is one of a kind. As much as I would love to simply pick up and move there, I know that I have to be realistic. I am coming in May with the hopes of trying to see if living there can be a reality. My main concern though is not being able to find work, which I know is a struggle for everyone in the community, let alone a foreigner. I am currently getting my Master's in Social Work. I have a lot of experience working with children of all ages. I am pretty much willing to do anything as long as I can make enough to live. Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions of people I can contact. Thank you so much!!! Missing Treasure Beach already even though I left this morning!

Maya Feldman

one of the bigger areas like Kingston or mobay maybe, but you have to remember that you are going to be competing with many individuals with the same skills and qualification. Jamaica does not hire social workers in each school like in the US. Check out the hospitals if they do hire, think about doing something else in TB . Make a good plan and think it over carefully and if it does not work right now maybe later it will
Good luck

Maya, I wonder whether there is an academic subject that you are particularly good at teaching and which might be in great demand in the local high schools? Munro and Hampton, for example, have a rich tradition of expatriate teachers helping to enrich their academic programmes and that might be one way to go for a start. I know that competent teachers in subjects such as mathematics, foreign languages and the sciences are usually in great demand. Not sure how competent you might be in any of these but if you are able to do so, it would certainly be something to consider.

You would no doubt be good as a Guidance Counselor but the Ministry of Education might not be willing to approve the employment of an expatriate in an area in which there are probably more than enough qualified locals. Once you are hired however you would likely find that your expertise in this area would be called upon as well.

Consider also the option of supplementing your income via the Internet while living in Jamaica, again if there are skills you have which could be utilized anywhere in the online universe.

I would really love to see you succeed in your aspirations to relocate to Jamaica and to Treasure Beach, specifically. I'm sure the community would benefit from your input, particularly in the field of social work.

Good luck!

As an American who jumped through many hoops to obtain his work permit in Jamaica, do not be naive. It is not an easy process. Many have come and gone with dreams of working and living in Jamaica. From what you say, the chances of you being allowed to work here is not that great. I agree to follow your dreams. But expect the worst. It is not easy. Jamaica does not go Ga Ga and get all excited because you are an American with talents. And do not think of a job there to 'suppliment your income'. That is expecting way too much. Reality my dear. Good luck though.
