CNN has a story about the upcoming elections in the Maroon town of Accompong in St. Elizabeth.

In addition to that article, which highlights a current negative in the community, I'll provide this Google search so those of you wanting more balanced information can read up on the Maroons.

This looks like as good of a place as any to post my inquiry
The Accompong Maroon festival is the weekend of January 7-9th this year, and I was wondering if anyone has been. How do you get there from Treasure Beach? How far away is it? Would it be best to find a place to sleep there or drive home?
Also, if anyone happens to be in TB during this time and would like to go to the festival and might want to split a ride, lemme know.
Check the bulletin boards on jamaicans.com -- either Discover Jamaica or Jamaicaholics -- where Bill Evans/aka Accompong offers help in securing lodgings during the festival weekend. Plan to overnight -- it's a haul from tb.
i would plan staying if at all possible, the bill evans idea is a good one. are you planning on going alone or as a group? it will be very interesting and well worth it if you can work out the logistics. wish i was going to be there with you mair, remember to stop by blue marlin if you get a chance.
walk good
My experience was the traffic was massive and difficult to get in and out on that day, so a stay over would be the best solution. The best ceremonies take place around noon and progress into a night full of music of all types, both live and sound systems. Bring a sweater, the nights get chilly up there!
Hiya Nige,
I'm goin' alone this year. I'll try to contact Bill again. I did post an inquiry on Jamaicans.com but forgot about my thread until it was too late, Bill had already left for Jamaica. lol (oops)
Have you ever been to the festival Nige?
nope, not to the festival, but, i went up there quite a few times in the late 60,s early 70,s with my dad who was with the dept of agriculture, he knew the old colonel quite well.
it is really a neat place, you will like it, but try and hook up with a few people to go with, i just think it will be more fun as a group.
walk good, nige
