Hi All,

Can you please recommend any places near or in Treasure Beach for financial literacy/money management classes? There seems to be very little understanding around how to manage money (savings, earnings, expenses, budgeting, giving, the laws of abundance, etc) in the Jamaican community on the whole. Does BREDs or The Women's Group offer classes? Also if they do, can they teach this to students with basic level reading and writing?

God Bless.

This is a fantastic idea. There is a crying need for this type of education. (I believe this sort of thing should be taught in schools starting in the primary grades, but it isn't.)

Though I have yet to meet anyone in Treasure Beach who is not good at math (whether or not they can read), I know numerous adults who hold responsible positions but couldn't figure out a bank account if their lives depended upon it.

Please understand I am not trying to be insulting because I am not. Yes, I would be willing to assist someone with simple course material.

Thank you both for your enthusiasm. I know one basic principle is to only carry the cash around that one plans to spend (so as to not overspend). Simple concepts like this, budgeting (maybe even having a hard-stock board to bring home with one's budget?), etc. could really benefit all. I am not currently in TB but I encourage you, Karen (and any others who are permanently in TB and who are ready and willing) to take steps forward with this! If/when I get back to TB I'd be more than happy to contribute.

God bless and in loving support.

To Financially Illiterate: I am not permanently in Treasure Beach, but if any organization there wishes to reach out to me for assistance, I will do my best to help.

I'm a CPA living in New England but planning a trip to TB after the tax season ends. I've taught basic financial literacy seminars to refugees before (From Nepalese to Cubans), and I've had great luck using an excellent set of documents produced by a US government agency that provides resettlement services to refugees. Shoot me an email if you'd like a PDF copy of this, johnbrobstcpa@gmail.com
