A local puppy (dog) was run over yesterday in Treasure Beach and as an American I am concerned for its mangled leg. It may have a broken hind leg, is still limping around, will not eat but is drinking lots of water. Are there any services nearby that would take on such a case? Even provide liquid pain medicine?

Bless!

I don't know of any free vet services in the area. Wish I did! The vet I use for my pets is Dr, Hendriks. His phone number is 876-965-2331 or 876-909-6385. He has an office in Black River but will also make house calls.

Glaad to know that Rebecca.
I do think animals need to be cared for more in Jamaica. They have feelings just like humans but they are treated as if they are a piece of wood or a door mat.

I do think they are abused "But" growing up as a child we never knew better how to show love to our cats and dogs.

Please, please give them lots of water, if they are tied out under a tree even more waater is required.
I know things are tough for everyone, but please provide even one meal a day for them also.

If you show love they give it back in return when you least expect. They could even save your life.

Hi All, I called Dr. Hendriks (thanks Rebecca!) and it looks like I am already doing what can be done for now--water, food and disguising pain medication in the food. The puppy started to moan today and even dropped to the ground in pain. Dr. Hendriks said it would take $3000 JA to travel to Treasure Beach plus an additional $2500 to assess the case. Then more would be determined form there. Not an ideal time for this sad puppy as Hurricane Sandy approaches. Even more, I shed tears as I had to kick him out of the house so as not to spread germs in close quarters! Let me know your thoughts. XO

dogs generally tolerate aspirin well, and as long as you are giving the correct amount with food, that should help with the pain and inflamation. if you can provide a small shelter perhaps he will stay near so you can continue with his care. there is probably a mom (if you would know who to ask) who may have splinted a broken wrist or similar in a child, and maybe could help with a simple splint. if there are internal injuries, that is a different matter altogether. best wishes and hopes for you all. and I agree with Dennis. you are a good person to care and help.

Dear concerned ones,

Thank you so much for your kind words, advice and prayers. The little boy puppy (probably no older than 2) was put down last night. The extent of his injuries turned south yesterday, and his mangled leg started to wreak of rot. Flies were attacking him, he again ceased eating food and upon visual assessment by Dr. Hendriks, it was suggested we put him (humanely) out of his misery. He was administered 2 shots and I held his chest as he took his last breath...and cried. He is in a better place now. Keep sending him prayers and stay in the loving. XO
