Just unwrapped and prepared my solar oven. Put on seasoned rice and peas for lunch. Got 250-300 degrees and a well cooked lunch.

turey...more appropriate, "scaled down" solar tech from di yahd:

"Solar energy is very expensive, (and) most Jamaicans don't have money like that"...That is why the inventor has introduced the GDI Solar Power Box. At $65,000...it is very affordable and could make a world of difference during the testy hurricane season.

Said to be a dependable emergency unit...the GDI Solar Power Box is good for operating a television set, radio, fan, blender and other small appliances including an iron (though with limited capacity).
It can also "bring a kettle to boil" with water for your favourite tea during the storm as well as power up security lighting for the home

The project...has had the backing of the Scientific Research Council (SRC), which "is assisting with research, materials and the patent".

The question for the power box is how long will the power last at 65watt?
bringing water to a boil is not long

For 100,000 I can build a systim that can give light two bedrooms and play radio and charge your phone every day .....for 3 days if no sun

Hi Paul, I am a landowner in Treasure Beach and would like to explore costs of solar. Are you a contractor? I'll be there in January, 2013.

Thanks for that Z. Glad to hear we are supporting inventors.

turey...as far as incentivizing young, old and in-between inventors, here's an Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) program: IDEAS Energy Innovation Contest for the Caribbean that should be posted on bulletin boards all over the place.

In the the recently awarded competition,"solar based technologies were the most popular ideas for innovation, followed by Biodiesel and Efficient stove/charcoal, and then a roughly equal representation of Biogas, Energy Efficiency,Wind and Transport. Applicants’ profiles were a mix of community based organisations, energy companies, existing companies and new enterprises."

Gold to green. The appropriate alchemy for this time.

More news on the solar agricultural front: Solar-powered farming - Local firms get backing for renewables, farming mix...nothing really mind-blowing in economic this sector, for what is "greenhouse", if not a solar/condensation collector (accumulator).

Yes Z. If push did come, we have salt water galore to solar scrub of salts etc.

Come to think of it, we have some springs that could be tapped now for an enterprising sould. If Ms Rose's water tests show purity.

What happened to the water tests?
