Usain Bolt's World Record for the 100 meter sprint stands at 9.58 seconds...from a crouching position, out of the blocks at Berlin in 2009.

The Jamaican mens' 4X100 meter relay team ran their record-breaking Olympic gold medal "legs" in 36.84 seconds, with Usain anchoring the final sprint.
That's an average of 9.21 seconds per each of the four Jamaican runners' segment, with presumably Blake & Bolt adding the most speed, but in effect, also taking the baton pass from a running start.

So the "natural" question to ask is: when or what "specimen' of athlete will break the 9 second mark in the 100 meter dash?

In 25 years (prior to Bolt's record) the 100m record has been lowered by 2/10ths of a second, 1/10th every twelve years.
Working on this rule of thumb of 1/10 improvement every twelve years, can we expect someone to break 9 seconds for the 100m in about 2208?

Over the history of the 100 meter dash "100m sprinters tend to be chunky and shortish (although Carl Lewis was neither).

The short, powerful build allows for an explosive start and the momentum to throw the runner through to the tape once he gets into his stride. The tall Bolt is described as ‘unfolding’ from his start. Once upright, though, he takes fewer strides than his shorter opposition to get to the finishing line.
Fewer strides in theory should be helpful to a sprinter, for when the foot is on the ground, the runner is momentarily being slowed down (think of a cricket ball slowing down after it lands on the pitch)".

Usain, with a glimmer of humility, admits that the US Olympic Decathlon champion, Ashton Eaton, was the best athlete in the world.

"I'm a great athlete, but to do 10 events, especially the 1500m, I have got to give it to him!"...U-turn Bolt

For those who cannot read Jamaican... Interpretation:

I heard they are planning to make a change in the next Olympics. They will be sounding a buzzer to start the race because they realize sounding a gun shot is what really makes Jamaicans run so fast.

Ms. Honeyghan's book "Y is for Yellow Yam" is really based on Bolt's attributing his strength and speed to yellow yam. Every Jamaican child should get a copy.
