A group of high school and college students from North Carolina and California will be traveling to Treasure Beach next week to conduct a water research project & various art projects, including painting a mural at Sandy Bank Primary School.

We are looking for students and community members interested in working with our group...any age, any skill level, everyone is welcome. It will be a lot of fun and you will learn a lot about how to protect our water resources.

See the post from a few weeks back for specific details about the water project. We're staying at Cacona, so if you're interested, come find us or call Gishard Stephenson at 876-417-3190. We are very excited about working with the Treasure Beach community!!

If you know someone who may be interested, please spread the word. Thank you!

Jaqueline...we only have to look to Negril, the resort town to our West to examine the "water crisis" developing right under our noses, and talk to the locals about the hardships and machinations in sustaining a steady water supply.

As reported by the Observer:
"Something needs to be done immediately to get the situation much better and the only thing that I can think of is some serious trucking as a short-term solution." (Mayor of Sav-la-Mar)

The acute shortage of water is said to be affecting both domestic and commercial customers of the NWC, including some hotels in the resort town of Negril.
President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) Evelyn Smith noted that some hoteliers in Negril have been complaining that they are dogged by low water pressure.

She noted that the industry is not only affected by the low water pressure at hotels, but hotel employees who reside in the community where there is a shortage of the commodity, are also negatively impacted.

In the neighbouring community...irate residents bemoaned the absence of the commodity from their pipes. They complain that they have to be paying exorbitant sums for water that is being trucked into the small community.

A female resident charged that despite the fact that they are not getting water in their taps, they continue to get exorbitant bills from the NWC.

"Them still a send these high bills come and we have to be paying over $3,000 for a load of water," the female resident rued, as she displayed a bill from the utility company.

Meanwhile, NWC Vice- President in charge of Technical Services, Mark Barnett explained that the chronic shortage of water is as a result of a two-month drought which has dried up the Negril water source by 50 per cent.

"An assessment of our production shows that we have fallen from 7.5 million gallons per day to currently about 3.5 million gallons, which is more than a 50 per cent drop in terms of the water produced for distribution."
(Mark Barnett)

Besides the price of electricity, for obvious reasons, including JPS's monopolistic tendencies and the utility regulator's (OUR...or is it THEIRS) timidity in relation to guarding/protecting public interest, can you imagine a more precious resource than watah, witnessed by the interruptions & trickles of it arriving in Treasure Beach homes.

If it's not the National Water Commission (NWC), on a seemingly arbitrary daily basis, deciding in which direction they will pressure-pipe this liquid gold, it's the sight of water trucks delivering water to storage tanks all over, especially beyond where the water-main ends, as in the farther reaches of Ft Charles.

Admittedly, much depends on the river and reservoir capacities of the resource, painful drought conditions, overdrawn aquifers and so forth...Could not simple, efficient rainwater harvesting, guttered into various storage cisterns, including an aesthetic version of the raised Rhino Water Tanks, go a long way in alleviating some of the "pressure" on the system.

Rainwater Harvesting Links:...to perhaps fire up the Imagine-a-tions of our young & old students....why not a little contest in designing/modeling a residential rainwater harvesting/aquascape environment???...Something that goes beyond painting Rhino Tanks in the national colours!

It is only in still water that we can see.
