Sandy Bank Primary School held their Sports Day on Thursday, April 26 at the TB Sports Park. The day started out a bit rainy and was overcast and threatening all day. But, thankfully, the rain held out and it was perfect weather for the events.

What a lovely day. The location was perfect. Jason, the BREDS team and those that contributed to this project must be commended for the sacrifice made.I walked this property from Primary school and I can hardly believe the development.I must congratulated the houses, Jakes, Henry and Smith for an outstanding performance especially Jakes the champion house.

May I ask when Ford, and Reynolds House was eliminated from the House lineup, at Sandy Bank Primary, and when did Jakes join? Wow! changes, Changes,

Traditions and history are not as important as money and agendas. Jakes has no history, but no doubt in time it will be recognised for its contribution to the development of TB. The denizens of TB must zealously guard our history and resist selling out our proud heritage to commercial interests.

Jason ALWAYS has the interest of TB above EVERYTHING, even his OWN interest. Don't for a minute think that money is more important to this wonderful man than any and all residents in the community.

I admire Jason too, Clarence. What you say goes well above admiration. It is putting Jason on the same pedestal one puts saints and martyrs. This is the kind of talk that makes people say Jason is NOT what you suggest and I think it does him more harm than good and starts arguments here. He has a wife and children and it would be hard to believe he puts the interest of the community above them. Be real, man, and people are more likely to believe you.

Be real you couldnt have said it better. Yes its nice for all the things he has done for the community and still doing, but my thing is the name changes of the houses is another. I do understand the change for Reynolds to Smith house is in honouring Ms PT, but they are other teachers that also could do with the recognition like Mrs. Madge Ebanks, Mrs. Ditty Ebanks and our principal Ms. Zane Ebanks so why not change the name to Ebanks house since they are all Ebanks. I also should make mention of Mrs. Norman Moxam too. So the point im making is we should name the houses after these great teachers that made us into the men and women we are today. Jason was never around when we were going to school so why should he be recognized for everything in treasure beach, come on treasure beach people be for real, was he the one who made you what you are today? We couldnt have done it without these wonderful teachers who was born right in TB except for Mrs. Moxam but she became one of us along time ago.

Correction I said Norman instead of Norma Moxam, I am so sorry Mrs. Moxam, and I also forgot to make mention of yet another Ebanks, who was an excellent teacher Mr. Collin Ebanks brother of Ms. Zane Ebanks. I am not knocking Jason here but I do think if name changes are done it should have changed to Ebanks, Smith, Moxam are even Thompson god rest his soul.

I have no problem with Jason or even that there is a name change. I just find it unusual that the house is named after a business. I could be wrong but I can't think of another house at any other school that is not named after a person. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Would someone please explain the meaning of the houses and their names? I don't understand this conversation at all.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Spooky Dude on Thursday, May 03, 2012 - 11:07 pm: Edit Post

Schools in Jamaica divide their students into groups called houses, for the purpose of internal competitions, usually but not restricted to sports activities. Names are assigned to the houses, usually the names of persons who have worked with or at the schools and that includes community members who have links with the schools. The honour is usually granted to those who have served, not to the ones currently serving.

We have a term when athletics is the focus ending with a Sports Day where there is competition between the various houses. This culminates in the Inter Secondary Schools Championships (Champs) where the fastest youths on the planet compete.

I was in Murray house at JC until I turn a big boy when I was moved to Cowper, both named after past respected headmasters.

Simple question. Why can't the names be changed once again to meet the customs and desires of the community.

treasurebeach girl, talking about changes changes yes numerous changes have been made at the Sandy bank primary School and to the best interest of our children and I know that Jason and the BREDS team are actively involved in the school life along with others so that this could happen. I cannot understand the problem that there is a Jakes house.I did my research Henry, Ford and Reynolds were not named after any teacher from the school. I know that there was a teacher Henry but it was named after Mr. Glen Henry. What contribution did they make to the school that Jason has not done. Come on guys this bashing is not necessary. Jakes house is around for quite sometime and I am sure that those that are associated with this house are very satisfied.I am a Jakite and I am proud to be so when I go to support my house he is always there with the team.Big up Jason I just love how you rally around your team.

I believe you are saying a house is a team and these teams are customarily named to honor a person who has worked with that school in the past as opposed to a person who is currently working with that school. You also seem to indicate houses are not named after businesses. Am I understanding now? If I am correct, would you please tell me how the houses get named and what might be done to change them if the kind of mistake has been made that is indicated. On the other hand, does it matter?

What is the custom of the community?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By two cent on Saturday, May 05, 2012 - 09:59 pm: Edit Post

What custom? I went to Sandy Bank Primary in a former lifetime and there was no such thing as Houses. This is a latter day introduction to the school and really doesn't warrant a debate. I have never met Jason, and probably never will. But if he is a major benefactor of the school I say more power to Jakes House.

Many institutions of learning here in the USA have received donations of cash from individuals and corporations, and have departments and faculties named after them. No big deal. I say, if you want to give money to the school and be recognized for it, run come with the money!

It is a custom from the English 2 Cent:

The house system was introduced many years ago. I went to the school in the 60's and the house system was in place. I suppose more emphasis is place on it now than back then especially in terms of sports.

turey, I was strictly addressing the Sandy Bank "custom" per se. I'm familiar with the tradition elsewhere, having attended other institutions of learning in Ja., and being a former contestant at both Western and National Champs (shot put and discus). Thanks for the info though.

Maybe we met at the last Champs at Sabina or the next two at Stadium 2 Cent? High jump and long jump.

Hence my Half Way Tree to Papine name 'Grasshopper' only remembered by some greybeards.

I personally admire people who do things for the community whose names are rarely mentioned in public especially the press. Those are the real unsung heroes in Treasure Beach.

You have a few years on me turey (Champs at Sabina Park?!) although the greybeard part is true. More power to all who would support Sandy Bank school. Education is the way out.

Yes 2 Cent, the last Champs was held at Sabina Park: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inter-Secondary_Schools_Boys_and_Girls_Championship s

I saw some discuses (disci?) in Kingston, should pick up a few if they are still there. Never had the upper body for shot put and discus but always admired the combination of strength and grace involved, certainly good educational tools handled when properly by the older students.

Is there a long jump pit and high jump equipment in the community?

I dont think it takes money to make a contribution to the schools, the teachers gave the biggest contribution ever. We couldnt have done it on our own so they are the best contributor of all, so with that said we should name the house after them. Yes Jason helps the community, and there is a but because while helping the community and the schools he is helping himself. [edited by TB.Net] Rebecca has done an excellent job for our community and our schools, so why dont we have a house named after her too, you all see my point. Give Ceasar whats due to Ceasar. Everyone is singing praises to Jason, well its time we sing some praises to Rebecca and Eric for making it possible for us to voice our opinions.

I am Jenny Reynolds child of the late Neville Reynolds.I was unaware that a House existed at Sandy Bank School bearing the name Reynolds.I am very humbled to learn this.My openion is that it is important to become relevant with our changing times as we remain aware of our past.I know that change is important but even more important is to keep written records of our past.I attended the early grades at Sandy Bank some almost 60 years ago I recall belonging to the BB Coke House.Maybe it is time to joyfully celebrate the retirement of some Houses as you choose others. Thanks to a community of service and caring.Jenny Reynolds Nelson

I haven't seen the sports park turey, but it sure would be great to have both facilities. Growing up in Treasure Beach, I can recall some kids were amazingly natural athletes. Seems to me the genes are there and only need a little encouragement. I for one think gymnastics could flourish there.

I found out after my father passed that he wanted to train as an athlete. He was sent off to study in order to take my grandfathers place. That little encouragement may have led him on another road.

A gymnastic facility would certainly benefit our naturals 2 Cent.

Celebrating Mothers;I got started thinking of the plans my children are making to suprise me but more important I am thinking gratefully of my past and all the childhood lessons learned that makes me the person I am today.I like to think about the lessons and the teachers I had in my early years in Treeasure Beach with lots of laugh and joy I was mentored by many.My aunt Iris with her quick wit and humour her wisdom and spiritually was beyond understanding.I think of aunt Emmas Bob and Clark delivering milk to them they made me feel like a millionair.I think of my aunt Vine leaving Folcian at nights with a laugh that lit up the sky.My aunt G said little but always comanded respect,Ms Larry and her kindness and beautiful embriodery charm and dignity.Ms Ina and Ms Bell taught me to shop for the best produce.Ms Enney to stand up for my believes.Meme reminded of my beauty wich others said did not exist.MS Atlly and my Mom baked cakes while sharing stories of their childhood.I recall the dignity of several hard working women Ms Joe,Ms Julia,Ms Enid Ms Jemimah,Ms Lydia Ms Girlie, teaching serenity and kindness,Ms Agnis and Ms Fermina teaching that girls can be buisness women.Ms Irene and Ms Evelyn taught gentle pride.Ms Estella taught endurance.I could go on but will conclude with the wonder ladies of Lewis Town who came to my fathers well to draw water and take home on their heads.I can still hear them laughing and see them making cottas and helping each other to load their water YOU taught me unity.I call my progects Jacobs Well.I saved two cousins for last who taught math in their own way Tata Daisy the teacher and Deggie the shop owner.Be ever aware that children do pay attention and learn from YOU. GOD RICHLY BLESS YOU TODAY AND ALWAYS.HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY jenny reynolds nelson.
