I'm old enough to remember when a former Prime Minister was belittled in certain quarters for the colour of his skin. I also heard the same remarks about the current PM during her first term, not for her colour but because of her constituency, and for being a woman. This time around I don't hear the murmurs as much. We have made much progress, and can teach the World so much more than we know.

Influential with what? Can someone elaborate please.

Lost...Time Magazine is in the habit of picking 100 Prime This...Prime That. In this case, their selection criteria are: people who inspire us, entertain us, challenge us and change our world...Those subjective choices (editorial decisions) are the breakouts, pioneers, moguls, leaders and icons who make up this year's TIME 100.

The list features 54 international figures from 37 countries and also includes several controversial figures, such as Syrian President Bashar Assad; North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un; and Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar.(Observer)

Jamaica has a long way to go. Still 'backwards' in many respects.

To: Political Or Not, {edited by TBNet} You need to read the article "Sold out for 30 pieces of silver?" written by Betty Ann Blaine in today's Observer and you will get a better understanding as to why Portia made the 100-most-influential trapping.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By El Aborator on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 - 06:41 am: Edit Post

Mullah Mohammed Omar is most influential..

It's painfully obvious that some of us haven't read the article and thus do not understand it's gist.

Oh gawd, why ban "political" discussions? Most matters in life are "political." There are politics of family, politics of village, politics of picking local builders over "outsiders" to keep peace in the community. It's ok to squawk about the canal debacle, but not ok to ask good and reasonable questions about what makes the prime minister" influential?" What is with the misguided censorship?

I agree too NAL. However, discussions on national politics trigger emotions in some of us that inhibit good reasoning and civil behavior. Maybe this is why TBNet steers away from these threads.

I'd like to discuss our policy making and policies, not our policy makers. One step in our National Psychoanalysis could be the examination of the development of personality cults and the accompanying polarisation of our society.

Who benefits from a divided nation?

True words turey. Polarization is right now causing the most powerful country of our time to be heading off the cliff. Let us reason with objectivity and not subjectivity. I think the confusion here has to do with the word "influential". We need to consider the word in the context of the article.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By turey on Sunday, April 29, 2012 - 09:59 am: Edit Post

Yes Sentry.

If we could measure influence in all it's various flavours and intents, there could be no disputing. The ultimate objectivity. I'm sure sociologists and statisticians have yardsticks. These will ultimately depend on the words of individuals that defy being quantified. Try plumbing the unconscious.

What is Jamaica's global influence?

Hey mon, Marcus, Bob, Usain, Ras, Herb, Reggae and all in our geopolitically strategic location in the land of Water Mumma/Atabiera with Brer 'Nancy in the wings.

Heavy.

Turey, I don't know if you set out to be obscure, but I am unable to understand in many instances, what you are trying to say! Anyway this influential nonsense is just that, nonsense. {edited by TBNet}

Thanks for reading it all Spooky, good thing I did not continue obscurely with 'context'.

Spooky D...let our beloved turey (ss) be turey...all that he is and all that he might be and speak his secular koans: A puzzling, often paradoxical statement or story, used in Zen Buddhism as an aid to meditation and a means of gaining spiritual awakening.

...Let him be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be..And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree...There will be an answer, let it be...For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see...There will be an answer, let it be...Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be

• by some bug group "on a high": The Beatles

Off to the apiary for some more be honey!

Or maybe I mix linear with lateral reasoning Z. Spooky gave me good guidance, be he this Duppy or not. Keep it clear and simple, not the sound of many hands clapping ;)

I am puzzled, myself. Change the world, in what way? did they explain in what way Mrs. Simpson meets the criteria? Does anyone have a copy of whatever happened when she went to US? Can you please post?

z, I doubt turey had koans on his mind,I did not detect a poser, I was just left with a question mark. I wasn't aware that I was considered a Duppy! Spooky yes, but still a Dude! I am still scratching my head! No meditation, hence no spiritual insight; maybe I should try some of Bob's bush.

When the crime rate goes down in Jamaica, when there is better health care-hospital, ambulance service, medicine, when there is better road provided by our governemnt and not from someone abroad, when the food that children have to eat to go to school gets cheaper (flour, eggs, bread, orange juice, milk) when children born out of wedlock or from divorced parents are looked at as having a father, those governing Jamaica may be able to say they are doing something. All talk and no action! It would be nice if the govt. puts something in place for wills to be registered. Too many kids are denied what their dead fathers leave for them because of the "other woman" No wonder some of our children are so angry.

Was in reference to the alternate Spooky Dude, Spooky. The Spooky Duppy.

I am not a Zen master, doubt Z was claiming that, jack of many trades yes; a generalist, but not a polymath. Maybe my fingers unconsciously scribed something that had the whiff of a koan.

How heavy was Bob's heavy? If you think he was. How not heavy, if you think he was not.

Interesting to know I can make the Dude scratch his head. Mind that bush though Spook, dem seh it cyan mad yuh!
