What are those, water lilies? I cant recall having seen those, very pretty and they dwarf the birds.

Oh yes Rebecca! Just about every child who attended Sandy Bank school will. I was never a lover of these pancakes (that's what we called them) but just the intrigue of going to the pond during the lunch hour and of course getting back late somtimes. Those who were crazy about them will sure have much more to write about.

Oh yeah!!! Pancake season is here again. Of course we would forget about the warning of crocodiles being in the pond, pulling up our skirts or pants above the knees and jumping in to pick pancakes. Then when the pond dries, the pod would become all dry and the hard black pancakes would fall to the ground. It was fun walking in the dry pond and searching for these goodies which we would take home or stop by the wayside and crack open with a stone.

On another note, i can recall that one year Mrs Gilpin had entered the flowers in a Flower Show contest at independence Park in Black River. This contest usually takes place around the easter season. Does anyone know if this is still happening? The Flower Show (I mean)? of course she was given a medal for this rare and beautiful display.

Great Bay, is this the flower show you're talking about?

I LOVE pancakes! Conga and Doreen at Ital Rest introduced us to them a few years ago. Conga walked with us to show us how to "harvest" the seeds. They are a yummy snack! I was thinking about the crocs while we were at the waters edge but I was assured there were none where we were standing. :-) Great memories.

Thank you for the pictures Rebecca; they bring back a lot of memories. I have a funny feeling that the name is really pondcakes, as in cakes from the pond. I got a good hiding from my mom once for sneaking out and gathering some. I loved them green but took no pleasure in the dry ones.

I have so many memories of those Pondcakes. I remember when I was at Sandy Bank School, I used to swap my lunch for pondcakes from the great Bay Crew :-)..Sometimes I would do so and sometimes I would used my lunch money to buy them in the morming, and at lunch time, I would share them with my frenz and they share their lunch with me...How can I forget those days!!!

Thanks Eric. It was after posting my little bit that I scrolled down and saw the post of Ms Joyce and her awards at the Flower Show. That is indeed the Flower Show I am talking about. It is really good to see that the tradition lives on.
