Today, almost one in eight people on the planet won't be able to secure even a glass of safe water to drink. More than twice as many people won't be able to experience the dignity of using a toilet. For women, this mostly means waiting until the cover of night to defecate which may provide some level of privacy but of course doesn't come without personal risk. They may sound unrelated but water and toilets couldn't be more linked.

March 22 marks the 19th anniversary of World Water Day, a day designated by the United Nations to drive attention to and action against the global water and sanitation crisis.

Most people ...are not aware of the significance of this day. It's hard to relate when you have water at the turn of the tap, the option to buy bottled water...down the block, and can access a toilet within 100 yards most anywhere you go.

We've known how to make water safe and to eradicate water-related diseases in the U.S. for more than a century.

Yet, today diarrhea alone is the second-leading cause of death in children under five. It kills 1.5 million children a year -- more children than malaria, AIDS, and measles combined.

Imagine if, today, we discovered the cure for AIDS -- and a century later children were still dying because we couldn't figure out a way to deliver it.
We need to deliver water and sanitation solutions more quickly. The time is now.

(Matt Damon & Gary White)

Peeple wah watah...hole im Joe!

92 years of water woes...Gov’t says Ja on track to meet MDG, but many rural households struggle to access commodity

Despite the drafting of many plans and the initiation of several projects by successive political administrations...individuals remain in a perennial struggle to enjoy the benefits of a July 2010 declaration of the United Nations General Assembly, which made access to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation a human right.

In 1999, the Government, through the national water policy, acknowledged that significant progress was being made in providing water services to Jamaicans, but in the same document accepted that more needed to be done.
"In rural areas, 39 per cent of households have piped water. This is an increase from 33 per cent in 1990, but a decline from the 43 per cent recorded in 1996.

A quarter of rural households get water from standpipes, and 22 per cent use rainwater tanks.

Often these solutions are appropriate. However, the Government is concerned that too many people in rural areas still do not have access to safe drinking water, or must make excessive efforts to fetch the precious liquid.

Eight per cent of rural households obtain water from rivers, streams and ponds.
"Of those rural households which rely on standpipes, more than half have to travel over 50 yards, and 13 per cent need to go more than 1,000 yards," read a section of the document which outlined several steps to be taken to improve the situation for residents of rural communities...
