Can a teacher please present a lesson plan on how I can teach my child the long sound in phonics? e.g the aaaaa sound in sway, may;
eeee in each. etc. How do I present it so that the child knows the y in sway is silent and the a in each is silent. What do I tell the child? I need him to understand but I forget how it goes.

Visit the book store and explain to them the problem you are having, they will help you to find the right books, and other resources that will help you. The books will explain to you how to teach your child.

Hey Foreigner, I know someone who is from this area but lectures in reading at Northern Caribbean University. I might be able to contact her.

The general rule is: when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking and the second one keeps silent. Eg hate and beat would have the first two vowels saying their long sound.For one vowel words the vowel says its short sound eg. hat and bet.Also plane versus plan.
With English there are many exceptions;you will then have to teach blending combined letters.
Eg ay together gives the long ay sound as in sway, play and pray.Of course, this is after the child has mastered the sw, pl and pr sounds.There are many other sounds you will have to teach, eg aw in flaw and claw; ight as in sight & fight. Then as the child progresses, introduce the different sounds of ea as in each & beach; earth; search.
There are some words which are sight words such as was, there etc that you just teach.Also read a lot to your child and point to the words as you go. Before you know they will outshine you. Have fun. I did. I am fond of the Abeka system.Google it.Oops, I am not a teacher by profession but by heart.

God blesses you Jerry!! This will make learning easier. I can depend on my Jamaicans to put fun in learning. We should establish a parent /teacher site for questions and answers.
