Could someone who understands the difference between a fishing net size of one and a half inches and that of one and a quarter inches help me to understand. And, what is the advantage of one over the other for the fishermen. Finally, which is better for maintaining a good fishing industry ? Thanks.

I would think the smaller mesh allows you to catch more fish but the larger mesh is better for the industry.

The bigger sized hole in the mesh allow smaller fish to escape. This will reduce the size of the catch in the short term, but will benefit the fishermen in the long term as more fish will survive to a larger size.

Spooky Dude is quite correct but you may also want to consider this.

Think in terms of the diagonal across the square.
In the 1.5 mesh it is approx 2.2 inches and in the 1.25 mesh it is approx 1.75 inches. Quite a difference in size.

Mesh size is really determined by the the species to be preserved and where the net is to be used - only the fishing scientists can work that out.

Ask Mr. Tufton, he said it probably cost him his seat in the election

I am not sure what you mean Canada, but we don't care much for politicians. We are more concerned about the fishing industry and the future of poor fishermen in Treasure Beach.

The price and quality of the wire is a much bigger issue than the size.

Canada,I really think it is more helpful to here from the people whose livelihood depends on fishing than a political view.We need the best wire.

I DONT WANT TO BASH ANYONE ,BUT ITS THE POLITICIAN WHO MAKE THE FINAL DECISION SO YOU JUST CANNOT LEAVE THEM OUT, THEY HANDED DOWN THE LAW AND WE HAVE TO LIVE BY IT .I HAVE NEVER SEE THE FISHING INDUSTRY IN SUCH A BAD STATE.BUT BY THE STROKE OF THE FINGER GOVERMENT CHANGE ,AND I HOPE THESE POLITICIAN WILL TAKE HEED THAT THE PEOPLE IS THE GOVERNMENT.I HAVE SPEAK WITH A LOT OF FISHER MAN THEY CHANGE THE SIZE OF THE WIRE TO PRESERVE THE INDUSTRY FOR THE FUTURE GENERATION ,BUT THE LIFE SPAN AND THE PRICE FOR THIS WIRE DOESNT WORK TO THE ADVANTAGE OF THE POOR FISHER MAN .THE PLAYING FIELD GOT TO BE LEVEL,YOU CHANGE THE WIRE AND YOU STILL HAVE THE DIVER RUIN THE CORAL REEF WHERE THE FISH LIVE

Yes, the divers Capella!! We need bigger mesh to protect the fish population for the future fishermen; there must be some sacrifice for there to be any fishing tomorrow. But something must be done about the divers too.

I am calling on everyone who cares about the fishermen in Treasure Beach to give voice to these families. Ask the new Government to pass a law BANNING divers from poaching and spearfishing indefinitely. That will protect marine life on the reefs as well as give some assurance that fishermen will find their catch when they haul their pots.
