I'm looking for information on using a black berry in Jamaica.

What are the rates? I will get an account in JA, so I'm not talking about roaming charges

What models are supported?

Anything else I need to know?

Thanks,

Check the Digicel website.

Thanks, dj, but their site is just trying to sell me a new phone. Can't find any info on rates/ plans, etc.

Does anyone who uses a blackberry have any info?

We brought a BB to JA last trip. It was an old phone (3 or 4 models ago) our friend no longer wanted. To be able to use it in JA on Digicell network it had to be "flashed" (jailbreak). You can have this done in Black River at the phone store for about $25usd. Then you can use the BB with a digicell SIM card on their network and buying credits will allow you to have talk time. Keep in mind...once your phone is flashed for the digicell network, I'm not sure if it will still be supported by your home network when you return. If it's an extra phone you have, go for it, if it's your primary phone, I'd do some more research before converting it.

Thanks for the info, BB user.

If you use a Digicell SIM card, will it still do the things a black berry can? Like IM, etc?

And I guess you're paying for the digicel rates at that point, right? I mean you're using their pre-pay cards and there are no other expenses?

It still did everything a BB can at home. Internet, Facebook, music playing, browsing, texting, we didn't use the instant messenger so I can't say yes, for sure but everything else worked the way it does at home.

And yes, you are paying Digicell rates. Once you are on the digicell network and using prepay cards, there are no other expenses.

I have AT&T here in the US and I always bring my BB with me to JA. I "jailbreak" aka "unlock" my phone here online for under $10.

Once in JA I am able to use Blackberry messenger, Facebook etc even without doing the jailbreak and I don't get any extra charges against my data services.

I only do the jaul break so I can use the phone to make calls, if not I would be roaming.
