Here's a link to the 50 best beach bars according to CNN International. Pelican Bar is listed #47.
Here is the article from this link:

"When a place claims to have “the best cocktails in the sea” it’s easier to be cynical. But Pelican Bar really could have the best, because it really is in the sea.
Part of the Jakes Treasure Beach resort, the Pelican is built out on a shoal requiring a short boat ride for a visit.
No Internet, no TVs, no pool tables -- just thatched roof, seats and booze. No wonder it’s considered by fans to be the single best beach bar in the Caribbean."
Is The Pelican Bar owned by Jakes?
Since when was Floyd's Bar owned by Jakes??
And no bathrooms. Please relieve yourself in the ocean - the coral reef's will be fine! [sarcasm].
Love the Pelican Bar nice and relaxing out there, one of a kind.
Interesting, about the bathroom, what is the situation? Is there a portable toilet?
Is Jakes in partnership with Floyd?
Spooky Dude, you should just go there yourself and see. Think about it...look at the pictures...No bathroom, but then again you probably would not sit there all day and night. I cannot believe you do not know the details about this. After all, you are THE Spookster!
Nope, no bathrooms there, and I never remember seeing any portable toilets. My daughter had to go to the bathroom, and as a parent, I did the responsible thing and took the waste with us. (there was an issue with privacy though, because there really is none of that there either).
If Jakes is now involved in Floyd's venture, perhaps they will consider making a small, curtained area where people can relieve themselves and provide containers for taking it with, or leaving it behind to be disposed of in a responsible way!!
It was a great snorkel area...after reading this, I hate to think of what we were snorkelling through!!
The toilet idea is great, as that will provide an even more positive experience with less anxiety for all.
Jakes had NOTHING to do with Pelican Bar, the idea was Floyd´s, and he build it him self...the bathroom situation, well that is a place to spend a couple of hrs, you eat, you drink and you GO HOME TO DO YOUR THINGS. Is fine just like it IS. A RUSTIC BAR ON THE WATER....
Well bob, I cant really see too clearly, a little portable potty could be lurking somewhere in the belly of the beastly pelican! I hope to visit one of these days, but being a man of unruly movements, I will at least have to travel with a 'scandal bag' or two!! That's what I am told the gully banks' residents use for disposing of their 'movements'! Here is a limerick for you bob:
A remarkable bird(bar) is the Pelican,
Its beak hold more than its belly can
It can store in its beak
Enough food for a week
And i'll be darned if I know how the hell it can!
OMG!!! Who gives a rats who owns Pelican??? Really??? Floyd's little bar is awesome and it's in the middle of the sea people. No bathrooms, ya gotta go then GO, the caribbean sea is a BIG place! If peeing in the sea makes you anxious you need to find somthing in JA that makes you relax and not worry about such minor things. Holy Smokes!!!! Relax, enjoy and don't make it so complicated!
All I know is that when I drink beer I go more often. So I don't think I could hang out too long at the PB!
I would put Floyd's Pelican Bar at #1 in the world. What could possibly be better? And thank goodness Jake's does not own it, or it might turn into a spa or something -- with bathrooms. Floyd is the best, and so is his bar, just the way it is.
Happy Campers know a ting or two...when you got to go, you got to go!

OMG! have you guys ever heard of tide, it comes and take the waste faster than you can let it go! [edited by TB.Net] so Floyd keep doing what you do hon! PB rule!
He should have a portable toilet..it is not that difficult to arrange. No. one is not bad, but number two...no no. Get a portable.
People just go to have fun and relax....[edited by TB.Net] We spend couple hrs there, had the FISH, SIT on the water with beer, got some sun...it was the BEST OF THE BEST TIME we ever had...with some friends. and on the way back a enjoyable ride with Ted. No complains
this is the most silly discussion i have ever read....bathroom at PB....lol
Pelican should at this point be licensed by the JTB in order to derive the support and international recognition it so richly deserves. Please Floyd, work with TPDCO and upgrade to include certain facilities. Would be delighted to assist.

I agree with Floyd! Best spot to spend a couple quiet hours....beautiful! No changes EVER necessary! It will be one of the most memorable experiences you have ever had in Jamaica. Stop whining people! Just like so many things in life, the CHOICE to visit (or not) is yours. I CANNOT wait to get out there next month and have a beer or two or three! ONE <3
Being licensed by the Jamaican Tourist Board; What does it cost and what do you get for paying that money? I have heard it is not such a great deal.
Miss Judy, you are not suggesting Floyd should have a real bathroom are you? Or is he supposed to tell people to hold it until they get back on dry land?
Thinking of the other artificial islands; the cruise ships. What do they do with their waste?
If someone can not hold #2 to they get to dry land, I would think they have a problem, just like going to a restaurant, just thise one is in the ocean, and Floyd did all that hard work of building that BAR all by him self....
The Pelican was given a two page photo in New York Magazine a couple of years ago. I thought then that it would be ruined. (See the neon, lines of boats and "are you one the list" to have a Red Stripe. But it hasn't happened and it remains what it is: the coolest beach bar on earth. I hope it makes a decent living for its owners and workers.
Everytime I had visitors, we went there, and we all love that place, like Van says, is the cooles beach bar I know, but remember it is a Beach bar and restaurant, he makes the best fish with rice....a beer to go with it
We've been a member of JTB for years. It costs money - depends on what you are and how big you are as to the money they charge - a whole lot of paperwork and inspections, very little consideration to small businesses, and I could go on. Not once has JTB directly brought us business - but they sure can ask for freebies. Then once we had some guests involved in a problem. Called JTB as we were always told they will help us during these times. Nope, told us to call somebody else. As we are a small business we asked if JTB offered group rates for insurances even health insurance for members or something. Nope. I guess JTB does advertise Jamaica world-wide so maybe that is what we are paying for. Never got us in New Yorker magazine or given us the exposure Pelican Bar has gotten over the years without being a member. Heck, we can't even get listed on the JTB website. I think Pelican Bar has done just fine without JTB. Probably much better. If JTB got involved there would be lots of rules and regulations put in place and that would ruin the place. There are many kinds of tourists not just the all-inclusive resort tourist. Sometimes people forget that.
As JTB members we could not get on their web site either. Also I am not sure what good it would have been because I hear establishments do not get rentors from it. Not being JTB endorsed doesn't seem to have hurt us one bit. It cost too much to run a guesthouse without paying dues for something that gives you nothing back for your money. It seems more like a charity and if I want to give my little bit of money away then I want to choose my own charity where it might help children or poor people or the elderly.
Tried to get household goods imported with no duty or less duty through JAMPRO. We didn't have enough bedrooms to qualify. Added more bedrooms and JAMPRO changed its rules to make us need even more bedrooms. Jamaican Tourist Board wanted us to have a 24 hour guard and a lifeguard or some big sign near the pool giving all the rules. WHO makes these crazy rules? Another entity wanted us to pay a tax because our guests touched the beach. Can get no tax relief for installing solar or wind while JPS bills are killing us. We need to pay a tax to display our sign. The roads are in horrible condition and eat into any profits made by drivers when they have to keep taking their vehicles into the shop. All this has nothing to do with the current or past elections. It is what the Jamaican government does to "help" encourage tourism. Meanwhile the people we keep bringing to Jamaica spend their hard earned money here. We lose money year after year. Isn't that enough?
JTB please keep your hands off Floyds. If you are worried about the environment, look at some of the local restaurants that manage to use styrofoam for everything possible. Floyd would never do that. He may not follow your rules but what he does is as good as it gets.
Floyd gives you a glass bottle and then turns it in. He gives you a real plate and then washes it. The Pelican Bar doesn't need PR from the JTB. They are more famous than all of Treasure Beach.
Lets say there is a place in TB that serves pizza and other food and drink and they have the proper bathroom facilities and their servers have the right food handler licenses. Would it then be OK with the JTB for this imaginary place to serve things in nonboidegradable glasses and plates.
What does JTB say. What does common sense say.
Is the JTB a branch of Sandals/Hedo and Co?
Before the JTB picks on Floyds for not belonging and then having to put in a proper bathroom and kitchen, it is my opinion they should go after all the establishments that serve drinks and soup and food from styrofoam. What about the plastic utensils they use? I refuse to believe that a tiny amount of urine will poison our seas. Does the JTB ask fishermen to hold it for several days when they are out at sea? Use your God given common sense.
who would think that a link about a bar in in TB owned and built by a hard working guy who has survived and rebuilt after hurricanes and continues to serve great food and drinks in an atmosphere that is ideal would turn into such a discussion about bathrooms??? Is this to say that none of these people have never ever peed in the sea?
What do all the different abbreviations stand for? JTB, JAMPRO, TPDCO and more.
Who would think the JTB could seriously imagine they HELPED establishments in TB get business? The way I see it they are another government bureau out to collect $$ from property owners who struggle to make it. Maybe they help the places like Sandals and the big hotels but they do nothing but give we small people trouble.
But are our servants listening?
This is a long established and respected forum focusing on the TB community. TB is refered to as a (the?) prime Jamaican Eco-Tourism/Community-Tourism destination. Why do none of our Public Servants post here answering reasonable questions and requests?
No portable toilet necessary there.
Kathy, you only pee? What about number two? A portable loo would be a welcome addition, just in case. Remember people swim and snorkel, wouldn't be nice to mistake floating faeces for fish!!
I think the discussion about preserving the environment is on the side of those who pay JTB dues even if they mess up things way more than people who don't pay dues. Maybe the unwritten purpose of the JTB is to protect its members.
Dude, I am guessing you've never been to the Pelican Bar. The facility you suggest is not at all necessary. The bar is a mile or so off land and anyone in dire need could easily get a lift in a boat. I can see you suggesting a bathroom for the Shallow Bar next.
How about chemical toilets about every 100 feet apart on the beaches. Yes this is as silly as the bathroom suggestion for the Pelican Bar.
Sorry JTB, I don't think you do your job. We are members and we get maybe one rental a year from someone who found us through you. Our rentals come from other places that promote consistently and professionally. Tourists do not look to the JTB for places to stay. I pay my dues kind of as a public service and not because I think I will get anything in return.
Silly, {edited by TBNet}...what is the harm in having one of those portables for emergency usage? Unnecessary, I have not actually been to the bar but I am quite aware of its location. {edited by TBNet} I cannot understand the resistance to having this device, it can be camouflaged to blend in with the rustic nature of the place. The alternative is nasty.
How about a reasonable 1 chemical toilet per beach? I think that proper waste management is a sane and reasonable goal, whether it be on land or in the sea. Improperly handled human waste causes real health and environmental problems.
Hey everyone, we think the Great #2 Debate has run its course here. If you have new viewpoints to share, please do. But we won't post anything that's just rehashing what's already been said.
