Glad to know some baby sea turtles hatched this morning in Billy's Bay.

Big up to Bobby, Carvel, Charlie and the Treasure Beach Turtle Group as well as the volunteers from abroad working with VIJON -Blaine, Addison, Yvonne, Stephanie and Alexandra.

Every bit of work on turtle monitering and beach clean-up makes a difference and it is nice to have locals and visiters working together on something of universal importance.

Hope to see some pictures soon!

How very exciting. Thank you so much to Carvel, Bobby, Sally and so many more for their dedication in saving the sea turtles. I can't wait to get an early morning phone call to tell me eggs are hatching and come quickly to see!

TurtleLover, you can use this code to embed photos. (Videos won't work at all I'm afraid)

Just copy the text above and remove the space between the slash and the curly bracket when you paste it

Thanks for the pics!

The best part of my day is hearing reports of turtle nesting or hatching from the three communities we are working with to monitor the 2011 turtle nesting season. Big up everyone in TB for their concern for turtles, especially Sally, Bobby and Carvel! We are working on a Facebook page, so that everyone can post records of nesting or hatching, even communities outside of our formal project. Will post here when it's up.

Diana,

the volunteers from VIJON are reporting seeing 2 sets of hatching nests in just their first 4 days of monitering!

They even helped about 7 struggling turtles from the last nest make it to safety. Pretty promising statistics and what a cool experience for the volunteers who have travelled all the way from England, USA and Germany to help out with this and other projects in Jamaica.

Actually helping a turtle get to the water in any way is its death sentence. Good intentions, bad results. A turtle needs the muscles it developes as it makes the short journey to the water. Without that 'training' it is doomed to death.

I believe the 7 turtles would have 100% not made it out of the nest from what I understand, they were helped only out of the nest as they for some reason never made it out.

Further, the volunteers are directly supervised by Treasure Beach Turtle group members who have been trained in this endeavor by NEPA and JET.

With the survival rate so low with the many hatchlings who make it to the sea, I doubt assisting 7 more hatchlings could have a negative impact.

Hi All,
I'm so glad the monitoring in Treasure Beach is going so well. I've been working closely with Bobby, Carvel and Sally and going out with them every month and I'm always amazed at their level of dedication. To answer the question about the hatchlings, we only recommend helping hatchlings get to the sea if they've been left behind in the nest. After a nest has emerged, the nest is cleared and the number of eggshells and eggs left behind counted so we have an idea of how many eggs hatched. If at that point live hatchlings are still in the nest they can be put on the sand and allowed to make it down to the water on their own. They would never get out of the nest any other way.

I hope this clears things up and I look forward to seeing you guys when I come back in August.

Christine
