One year (not last year) my old -- with a pull out antenna -- Verizon cell phone worked in TB. I now have a new one that seems to be more useful, and is supposed to be international. Is it still true that you have to get a jamaican phone?
What will a basic (telephone calls to the US) cell phone for a month cost at the airport?

And I know it's been asked and answered before, but wi-fi in TB? Thanks in advance for the info.

my advice would be to stop in montego bay at the digicel store, there is one on the hip strip, watch for it on the left side when you are heading away from the airport.
phones are inexpensive....can be approx. $25 , (less than $3.000 JA) you can check for yourself .... http://www.digiceljamaica.com/en/
SIM cards are not expensive less than $10 and usually have a bit of credit, you will also get $100 credit for free the first time you put credit on your new phone.

much better option than those roaming charges that cost more than your airfare for sure

if you are going to be making a lot of calls back home you can load $1,000JA credit on your phone and talk for 1000 mins.
there are other long distance options as well, best for you to ask in the shop when you purchase your phone and they will even then be able to set everyting up for you just so

hope that helps

Upon your arrival you can purchase $1000,jamaica dollar international credit. Which Ifind very cheap especially if you are calling landline. For the uk i Got 16 hours of calls to landline and for the us it might be more.

Totally agree with Twisted Sista. Your Jamaican number will expire after 90 days of non-use, so either give the phone to someone as a nice tip when you leave, or take it home and buy another SIM card (with a new number) and an International Plan card when you return. As an FYI, the 1,000JA (International Plan) card will cost about 1,200JA because of taxes and fees; and, if you want to make local calls, you will need to load up your phone with still another card. But even this "double" alternative is less expensive than bringing and using your Verizon phone.

If you put credit on your phone, doesn't that restart the 90 day countdown? IE: If you add credit within the 90days, you don't loose your number?

Yes, if you put credit on your phone, even as little as 100JA, that again starts the 90-day countdown. It's difficult to do for tourists who will be off-island unless they leave their phone with someone who is willing to do that for them.

I wonder if you use an online service like ezetop.com to put credit on a phone if it would update without the phone being in JA?
