The TB Citizens Alert Group is organizing a peaceful demonstration to be held on June 1 in an attempt to bring attention to the unfinished canal system. The police have given permission for this demonstration and three media houses will be present to cover the event.

They are asking persons to assemble at the Kingfisher Plaza at 10:00 a.m. They will then proceed down the road to the canal.

For further information contact George (Bones) Deleon at 864-8030.

What objections will be aired? What are the current explanations by those responsible about not being able to deal with these objections.

The press will need to be shown specific locations that are now at peril because of the canal and any other disruptions caused by the work so far.

Good reasoning and clear images carry a worthy case far.

Good job George and others. Put some pressure on our MP and other responsible parties. Things and time tough but this situation is a peril to people's lives and property. Good luck!

A meeting was held on Friday with members of the Citizens Alert Group and Minister Tufton. A compromise was made where members of the Citizen's Alert Group will meet with the appropriate government officials and discus options and/or plans for the canal.

An exact date was not set for the meeting but they were assured it would be within a short amount of time.

Therefore, the protest will be postponed pending the outcome of this meeting.

{edited by TBNet} Comprimise? Comprimise what?
They get to meet with government officials, the ones that they pay their salary, and discuss options/plans? Oh C'mon! How long will that take? And no date set? Oh C'mon! You watch: the summer will come and go and it will be no closer to resolution than it is now! {edited by TBNet} So the protest is postponed until there is an outcome of a meeting, that has not been scheduled. I can see it now: The meeting will be decided in the next few weeks. And the meeting will be in July at the earliest. Then there will be no progress made, and another one will be scheduled in August. That one will be delayed for one reason or another...{edited by TBNet}

I would hope that concerned citizens will bring along pictures of the flooding that occured in the past to let the powers that be see what can happen in the future. While I personally am not optimistic, I do believe that one picture is worth 1000 words. Good luck.

I will be more gentle.the protest was 'postponed'. You would have felt better afterwards...You should have went on with the protest as planned. The GOJ has had PLENTY of time to act. Now they say there will be a meeting...'someday' to difuse the national attention a protest would cause. I am confused as to why. You would have felt better and empowered more tha you do now had the protest went on as planned. Hopefully the GOJ will not talk to the police and not allow it next time...Stay tuned.

With all due respect, Mr. Deleon, Minister Tufton has been painfully aware of this situation for ages. Why did it take planning a peaceful protest to have him to say he would set up a meeting. Was it because of the promised press coverage and the possible ensuing embarrassment?

We all know when and if the meeting is held, the various government figures will all point fingers at other people or other agencies, say they are powerless to do anything and then say there is no money to do anything anyway even if they had the authority.

I have a feeling if heads of the responsible agencies were forced to camp out near the canal during a very heavy rain and were not allowed to leave no matter what, they might find a way to remedy the problem. But they do not have to live with it the problems or even near the problems. All they have to do is make some official statement and look dignified when things go wrong.

I want to say it's incredible no one bothered to respond to this but what more is there to say? The officials involved should hang their collective heads in shame. They don't refuse to take their salaries. Why do they refuse to do their jobs?

A peaceful demonstration was held at the Kingfisher Plaza on Wednesday bringing attention to the road conditions there as well as the unfinished canal. I have been off-island for a while and was not here for the demonstration but understand it did receive media attention as I have heard it was shown on national TV news for the last two nights.

If anyone attended please let us know more about it.
