Yes folks we all got a bit shaken this morning with an earthquake. Here is an article from The Observer.
http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/news/Earthquake-measured-5-0
At 10:06 this morning we all thought at first we heard a big truck coming down the road, then the noise intensified and the earth started to shake. I think pretty much all of TB ran out of our houses and continued to feel the earth shaking. The quake lasted 10 seconds which, trust me, is a long time. Immediately following were two aftershocks.
I've not heard of any damage done but we all were certainly shaken in more ways than feeling the earthquake. I heard of several children calling their parents wanting to leave school and go to higher ground as they were afraid of a tsunami.
The link from www.earthquake.usgs.gov says it was a 4.7.
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/dyfi/events/us/2011kza2/us/index.html
Again, I've heard of no damages caused by the earthquake and for that we are feeling very grateful and blessed.
We are getting reports in from friends in Black River who said it was definitely heavy there but, again, no damage reported.
I just got the news thanks Rebecca for your info its so nice we can communicate with our familys, keep up the good work.
Thanks Rebecca for this info...Thank God for His love and His mercy...Sorry to know that there was an earthquake there, but thank God no damages has been done...I can imagine those scary moments, but God promise to take care of His own...After seing so much disaster with earthquake in some places, I think we can lift our hands up to God, and say "Jamaica is bless"...Nuff love to you all.
Hope everone is ok. Thank goodness the children are being eductaed and had thoughts of moving to higher ground.
Rebecca, may you be deeply and truly blessed for your tremendous community service and in extension Treasurebeach.net.
Some of those buildings in Black River are so old and run down I'm surprised to hear there was no damages.
The bridge should really be inspected.
I must say I am relieved to hear all is good.
God was on our side.
I just got the news thanks Rebecca for your info its so nice we can communicate with our familys, keep up the good work.
Has a Tsunami ever affected TB? Jamaica? I know about the storm surge in Ivan (and I imagine other hurricanes), but that seems different.
Rosie, you say "God promise to take care of his own'. So are you saying that the children of Haiti, Japan, New Zealand are not his own? Ever think that maybe it is all coincidence what happens out there? That God does not 'Bless' Jamaica while not blessing elsewhere? No, Jamaica is just lucky....for now...What will you say Rosie when "The big one" comes? Will you then lift up your hands and say "Thank God, Jamaica is Bless"?
Jamaica is really bless, bless, bless...This is no luck my friend. We need to count blessing
from luck. Rosie was right...God has been good to us and we have to accept that fact!!!
I'm surprise at what glen reply to one of the above post. Who on earth in their right mind would want to see Jamaica or anywhere else destroy by an earthquake? we should never wish distruction on anyone, sometimes we have a lot of blessing to be thankful for and we by-pass them. Rosie was just trying to say that God has spare us from being destroyed by that earthquake, and it hard to see someone talking about "The big one" glen, would you like to see the big one hit Jamaica? well, well, well, May God keep our little island and its people safe.Let us keep praying.
I must commend the staff of the Sandy Bank Primary for doing an excellent job in vacating all the students from the buildings onto the playfield in what appears to be seconds.I was told that they have earthquake drills at the school so the children are aware of what to do whenever there is an earthquake. Members of the staff who are trained counsellors along with the PTA president were able to do individual and group counselling with the students.Thank you for your committment. You are an excellent team.
Van, there is evidence, although not empirical, that we MAY have had a massive tsunami in the distant past. That evidence, the "sandy hill" of Great Bay, though largely removed, provokes belief that a tsunami could have entered via backseaside, between the Bluff and the Pedro Hills.
We give thanks to Providence that all is well in TB.
Glen, we all are God's children...I did not say those folks who suffer great from earthquake are not God's own!!!..I did not say God bless Jamaica more that how He bless other places. BUT when there's something to be thankful FOR we need to be thankful . WHAT BIG ONE are you talking about? Would you REALLY like to see Jamaica STRUCK by a big earthquake? Where is your heart? I for sure would not like to see my Island Jamaica destroyed.Jamaica is not lucky.. JAMAICA IS BLESS!!! And you will not take that away from me. I believe in God, and I know what BLESSING IS!!! We have seen Jamaica suffer great from Hurricane, and all through that, there was always something to give God thanks for after those hurricanes...To all you God bless folks who used this God-gift web-site, please let us pray and continue to ask God to continue to BLESS JAMAICA...When we dont know God, we dont know blessing!!May God Bless beautiful Jamaica.
I dont see why glen have to be talking about "THE BIG ONE" I cant believe that there is someone out here is wishing bad things on our little nation...God is not the answer of bad prayer...God bless Jamaica, dont matter what it suffer, God bless us!!
My! My!! Negativity has to rear it's ugly head every time. Mag and Rosie you have both done a good job in responding to Glen. May God continue to bless our beautiful Jamaica. We are truly a blessed nation.
There are people who read this site of many different religions, not only Christian. Some are very religious and some are not. There are people who read this site who do not consider themselves members of any particular religion but still believe in a higher being. There are people who read this site who are atheists and agnostics. I consider myself a fairly religious person, yet I share Glenn's dilemma about why a just God would not protect all people. I also wonder why some people get spared and others do not. Though people say the Lord works in mysterious ways, I cannot understand why so many Haitians and Japanese were killed when they did nothing wrong and led decent lives. I would prefer people ask God to bless and keep safe people of all religions from all countries.
These things are called "NATURAL DISASTERS" for a reason !!
However, whoever is spared are survives one, should give "thanks and prasies" to whatever "God" that they worship !! If you do not worship a God, then you should be just THANKFUL !!
ONE LOVE !!
Mike
Sentry I support your thought regarding some significant natural disaster in that geographical area in the past. Just go up in the hills as far in land as Short Hill,Claremont Park, Bigwoods and you would be amazed at the thousands of shells that are there. I would really be glad if someone could shed some light on this. I have been curious about these shells in the hills from my eyes were at my knees.
Mike you put that well. One love
Don't treat me as inferior because I don't believe the same as you or nothing at all.
Don't befriend me in order to attempt to make me believe what you do. Real does not deal in fake.
Don't harm me because I resist following your way.
Practice what you believe. Unless the belief includes harm to others based on those beliefs.
Be prepared for and expect the unexpected.
Beware of magical thinking.
I think folks are seriously over reacting to Glen. I didn't see anywhere where he is wishing for destruction on Jamaica. He simply posed a question that most objective minded people often ask. There are two possible answers: If God is not selective, then what happens to us has nothing to do with blessings or the lack thereoff. On the other hand, if He is selective, then we need to rethink this whole thing. Fair enough?
I'm with you Glen. I read your post not as hoping for the big one but as asking what the religious person's thoughts will be when it happens.
There will be continue to be earthquakes that hit the island if history is any judge. Some will be small, some big, and some huge. Not a matter of if but when.
Yes I too must commend the Sandy Bank Primary School Teachers and students I was next door to the school and see it with my own eyes.I was impress with there alertness and there bond .U should see teacher rallying around there students calming them down and students embracing each out.I cant tell u they did an excellent job.Continue do what u teachers doing and keep it up.
STOP! STOP!
Jamaica has enough on her plate, why be negative in our thoughts. A prayer meeting should be taking place in TB giving thanks for spearing our beautiful little Island.
I think sometimes we are too quick to jump to judgment.
Thumbs up meex
I don't think tectonic plates respond to prayers or thanks Meex. Good emotional release though.
Suspending judgement and independent rational thought should be encouraged from early on as part of our liberation from mental slavery.
When was the last time TB had an EARTHQUAKE?, 10 sec. is a very long time and they are not fun at all, you think, what could we have done to deserve these, is it the end, what next?...need to give THANKS, that is not often there, like for so many other countries....bless you all.
Hi everyone! I in NO WAY EVER implied that I want to see the Big One hit Jamaica! Re-read people!!Thank you 'Sentry and non religious' you read it right...The rest of you, please don't treat me like a heartless idiot! All I am asking those who obviously have more faith in God than I do...If your 'God' blessed Jamaica, he must favor Jamaica over Haiti, Japan etc. right? OPtherwise he would have 'Blessed' them too right? If not, then your theory is flawed. And you can live in your la la land of no Big One ever happening all you want. It is coming. Just don't know when.I do not wish that at all. In fact I may very well be there when it happens! Go ahead, believe in God, I more than respect that, and I will believe in indiscriminant acts of natural disasters based on fault lines...To each their own, and Agnostics and Athiests are not bad people! Those who judge are!
Thank you parents for commending us. We highly appreciate it.
Tsunami ever hit Treasure Beach?????
Evidence
Sea Shells found in Santa Cruz!!!
Sea shells found in Santa Cruz may only be proof that at one time the sea was that high
Most Tsunami are caused by earthquakes, and most often move latitudinal due to the position of the plates which are mostly longitudinal- north/south. Jamaica's land mass runs on a east /west axis exposing little land mass to a tsunami created by plate movement. Tsunami can be created by a portion of land sliding into the sea, volcanic eruptions, and meteorite impacts These causes would be more problematic for Jamaica. Tsunami is rare occurrence in the Caribbean but it does happen about every 500 years. The shells found in Santa Cruz- Most land has been part of sea floor at one time or another , or maybe someone had a big clam bake. I would be more concerned by storm surges from hurricanes traveling due north and have hit the area east of Treasure Beach about every 75+ years. Sav was destroyed about 200 years ago by a storm surge and many people died. Bodies and boats were found 2 miles inland. You never can be certain were and when a tsunami or storm surge will strike.
Here is a lecture based on a study for faults in Kingston Harbour.

Samplings at various levels from the existing and undisturbed dunes in the area should give much information.
Here is some info on the Sav tsunami:

Good point Fred, but one that is consistent with my belief that a tsunami could have been responsible for depositing the sandy hills I mentioned earlier. If you are familiar with the location and topography of backseaside, you will know that it is north-northeast of the Bluff point and south of the Pedro Hills, creating the perfect inlet for a tsunami to travel east/west (latitudinally).
