I'd be interested to know about gardening/farming around TB... do many grow their own food, or are there local farms that supply the area? I believe at our villa much of the produce was picked right there on the property. What types of crops are suitable for the soil? Where I live in the US, we grow our own vegetables in our backyard (spring thru summer) but the soil is very poor, much of it shale and clay. We get around this by using raised beds and a square foot gardening method. We also try to use varieties that will produce seeds for the next year - many so-called "improved" hybrids produce seeds that are sterile. Would love to know about gardening in your corner of the world.

I short Suzanne, the techniques and materials of the so called Green Revolution are common practice here.

In the last decade or so, there has been an awakening to the importance of maintaining the integrity of heathy soil. Much biomass is wasted by incineration or innapropriate disposal.

Many are also waking up to the widespread use of toxins and their effects on us.

The quality of soil is key. To improve ours, we compost our fruit and vegetable peelings, moldy bread, weeds from the garden, shellfish shells, ashes from the woodstove... it's amazing how you can take items you need to dispose of anyway, put them in a pile, and time and a little moisture turn them into something you can use to make your life better.

If yourself or anyone with composting experience is in TB, Pulpy in Great Bay is tending his first heap. I'm sure he would welcome advise and encouragement. I'm in Canada now.
