The St. Elizabeth Parish Development Committee (PDC) is to put together a sustainable development plan for the parish, with funding from the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI).

According to Chairman of the PDC, Jason Henzell, who spoke on (December 13) at a Quarterly Meeting of the group at the Social Development Commission (SDC) Complex in Santa Cruz, the over $21 million project will strengthen the work of the St. Elizabeth Parish Council and put the parish on a path of organised development.

"It is to do with the Greater Treasure Beach Sustainable Development Plan. Although there will be support for the Treasure Beach to Black River area, we don't want to leave out the northern part of the parish. We want the communities to be revitalized and this project is going to strengthen the PDC and the Parish Council, by way of human resources and purchasing of new equipment." he stated.

Local Coordinator for the CUI, Phil Rodriques, told the gathering that the project will take on things that are achievable with the least difficulty and with multiplying effect. "You might find that Treasure Beach might become the tourist centre, or Black River could become the historic town, and you build up on that. One section might become the industrial area. You want to ensure that everybody is at the table to create the parish vision, and you get one comprehensive document that would have covered the entire parish and collectively those documents work as one development plan." he explained.

He also pointed out that the document will help to identify areas earmarked for certain types of development and for future planners and lobbyists to use as a guiding tool.

"The document will become a lobbying tool for community advocation and planned development." he told his audience.

Yet, no assistance has been offered to some who have declared that they have some understanding of sustainable development and are walking the path with small change. Maybe thats the best way?

The source of $ usually dictates it's use. I see no effort by Canada to promote real sustainability at present. I live there.
