I had always hoped that some day there might be a Treasure Beach co-op produce market on the main road to sell TB's bounty. All over the island, St. Bess is famous for it's produce. I was shocked to see on Facebook that Jamaica's On The Ground News talked about the failure of an event I had never heard about.

One-Day Farmers’ Market a grand disappointment in St. Elizabeth?

(RJR)by On the Ground News Reports. on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 8:17am

A number of buyers who turned out in St. Elizabeth on yesterday were left disappointed with the one-day market sale to ease the glut of agricultural produce.

Our news team spoke with persons who travelled to the parish from other parts of the island.

They expressed shock that only a handful of farmers turned out to sell their produce.

One patron, who said he traveled from Hanover, this morning, expressed disappointment with the offerings, and said he was going home empty-handed.

“I came all the way from Hanover with the intention to buy a lot of things, I brought a big van, to help the farmers…but there is nothing here. There is nothing to buy, everybody is standing here looking,” said a patron of the market.

The Agriculture Ministry said the event was planned to allow farmers to sell crops which they have in excess, to consumers.

The One-Day Farmers’ Market was held in St. Ann, St. Mary, St. Catherine, St. Elizabeth, Clarendon and Manchester.

I would hope that something like this is tried again and that it receives plenty of pre-event publicity to ensure its success.

Did anyone tell the farmers that this event was happening?
Posters may not such a good idea as many farmers are not schooled well nuff to read them

Wow I am surprised as well -- I just came from a Winter Farmers Market (2 times/month) in NH and go weekly to the summer one.

I too would think this would be an amazing time/place to stock up and support the community.

I never heard of it myself and would surly tell staff at villas as well as guests if was tried again and I knew about it.
