Would anyone agree with me that Treasure Beach is now oficially a retirement Community?. There is absolutely nothing there to do!!!

LOL.

I suppose its all relative, but I find TB to be plenty exciting for this 40 year old. People have accused me of acting like I'm retired, but I'm not quite there yet.

Most retirement communities have a lot to do. The difference is that most of the people don't work and are living on their savings. They have a lot of time on their hands. They do things like go to classes and do volunteer work.

I am thinking some people think Treasure Beach is very boring. I think the opposite. I think there is plenty to do but when I am on vacation I prefer not to do too much.

'From Yard' you couldn't be more wrong. My teenage sons find endless things to do in T'beach. My twenty and thirty year old friends have never been bored for one minute. I moved from Kingston and Ochi back to T'beach because those places were 'boring'. I never run out of things to do, places to go, people to see. There's a great social life, interesting people to hang out with.

Do you think it's boring because there's no strip clubs, shopping malls, casinos etc? I can tell you, a lot of very, very famous people come to Treasure Beach and none of them have ever found it boring. These are people that come from New York, London, Paris and I can tell you they don't think it's a retirement community at all.

There's a saying that only boring people get bored.

Nothing to do is why I go.

I'm close to 'retirement' and I never have a boring moment in TB. OK, maybe if internet goes down I'd read more.

A well run and staffed retirement community here would be in the right place and I think would fulfill a need for many.

We just spent a week there and fell in love with the area and its people. No there is not a lot to do, but that is the reason we visited. Good relaxing times is what we needed. We did have a car so we did cruise around and found much to do from Little Ochi to the Pelican bar. Had some very good times at Smurfs. I guess it just depends on what one wants to do.

Jenny writes I find TB.very stimulating long walks, swimming, talking to people, volunteering at Sandy Bank School, picking up garbage on Frenchman Beach and best of all hauling boats.I got paid in roasted trunk fish served on almond leaves.I have also had the pleasure of speaking to the TB womens group and worshiping in one of the churches. My only concerns are medical care, public transit and entertainment.I think TB. could be an excellent place to retire one of my sisters is giving this idea thought.

To: From Yard.

Hoping that as you find TB "boring", you will not venture there in the future.
Suggest instead you visit Negril or Montego Bay.

Treasure Beach is a delightful community to visit when you want to get away from the the hustle and bustle of a big city and God forbid the dreadful winters.

It all depends on the person what they really want their vacation to be.Some like it drinking, dancing ,club hopping. Some just want to lay back in a hammock with a good book and a cold drink, walk on the beach and feel the sand between their toes, listen to the local musicians with the banjo, guitar, and harmonica/mouth-organ.
Walk and talk along the way with the villagers and take boat rides and snorkle in our crystal clear ocean.
I love TB and I know it is not just for retirement folks and if that is even the case that still is OK! with me.

Peace and quiet that is what I like.

So this is my response for....From Yard.
You will one day enjoy TB more than you think, just wait until you get old and feeble because we will all get there one day.

Like the saying goes....if you life long enough you will get to it.

TB is not a party place, is a very slow pace place,a drink, with a book, on the beach, island music, that is how I like spending my time there, NICE BEACH HOUSES FOR SALE, SO, I THINK TB WOULD BE A GOOD PLACE TO RETIRE

How I wish I could get some of that boring place right now!!There is another word for boredom, ennui(pronounce ahwee)which means boredom from lack of interest. If one has no interests one will get bored anywhere, as boredom is largely a state of mind. An interesting person seldom gets bored, so if you get bored easily, check to see if you are not a boring person. I have been drinking the same cup of tea every morning for umpteen years, and I look forward to it every time, and I always feel a little disappointment when I take the last sip!!Ever notice how a place comes alive when some people are around!!Think about it.
If you like dance-hall music, and think that people who never heard of Voice-Mail,the singing group, must live on the moon, then TB will surely be boring for you!

I love my home and will retire there!!! but the truth is it's boring. South Jammin can't even open as the neighbours dont stop complaining. I am happy for all those who goes there and find excitement, marry the young men and they get to leave the community. Hey enjoy Treasure beach it's a quiet nice rest for sure.

I've heard via the grapevine South Jammin will be re-opening soon under new management. If/when I hear more and the rumor is confirmed or not I will let you know.

I will also add that if an establishment complies with the law then no one can stop them from operating.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By meex on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 - 02:35 pm: Edit Post

Maybe if the owner of South Jamming would explain to their tenants the rules and regulations before renting then they would obey and do good business.

Why do one have to blast their music until wee hours in the morning and make other people's lives miserable?

Soft and low music is more enjoyable anyway, and if a time is set for it to be turned off then all will be happy and then there would be no complaints.

There will always be another day to have more fun.

I know I hate loud music not being able to even carry on a conversation while sitting there.

You are not playing for the area you are just playing for your patrons.

You can have the bars and the restaurants from calabash Bay to Billy's Bay, 1 mile beyond Billy's Bay is Fort Charles Bay. 11 miles of beach. You can never be bored. Then near to Fort Charles Bay is Button Bay Beach Getaway. Great.

I personally have to agree with most posts here. I do not find TB boring at all, there is always something to do..albeit might not be the same sort of things some people want to do I find it very relaxing. Some days I have no idea what I'm going to do, I take a walk and low and behold something happens. I may stop and have a drink, run into a friend, end of going for a boat ride, end up going to Little Ochi...who knows. Much better in my humble opinion than Negril

WARNING!!! COULD BE DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH IF YOU WISH TO PARTY!!!.
Treasure Beach is a string of sleepy fishing villages located off the beaten track on Jamaica's desert south coast

a peaceful vacation destination
a community-based tourism destination involved and active in sustainable local development

laid back, friendly, and proud to call it home.

South Jammin appears to have opened and closed and been bought and sold many times. Their location seems perfect for an establishment that could make money. Does anyone have a clue why there has been so much turnover there.

I am seeking investors to cooperatively purchase an existing 10 room hotel- go to - www.buttonbayjamaica.com which is located on the sea on 3 private acres about 3 miles from Treasure Beach. The concept is to create a coop, a core group of people who wish to be in Jamaica in an creative and natural setting for extended stays. The property is in excellent condition, has a commercial kitchen, beach and pool. If interested just email me.

The idea is to spread the cost out among a number of investors making it affordable for those of modest means. This would be done by creating shares bought by a core group of people to purchase the property. Each share would equal number of days visit during the tourist season which runs 12/15 until April 1.
No this is not a time share but a fractional ownership.
The property could be still operated as a for profit resort that could rent units off season. Also the profit side could rent back units/shares not occupied in season to benefit the investor. The idea is generate income to off set expenses and maybe make some income for the investors from the for profit side. Hopefully the share value will increase over time. Shares can be sold to future investors or traded. At this time this is just a concept but I am willing to make this happen, but I will others who are willing to do the same, to make it happen. I am open to any and all ideas.Button Bay is very special place to retreat, relax, create, to be.

It would be a great place for retired people.

Quite, lots of sunshine, good diet doable, a nurse or two and basic meds. Hypertension recorders and glucose meters etc. Doctors reacheable and Black River Hospital nearby. Long term stays over the winter.

I bet many health providers would enjoy working in such an environment.

It would be a great to have all sorts of talented members from many professions and also guests who could provide a wide range of activities and services for health and well being. I believe that Button Bay would be of interest to mature people but not limited to those retired. The plan is to structure a buy out with the current owner and testing the market/interest staring Jan 1. This process will take time but if you any interest contact me to set up an appointment and tour the property this coming winter.

Great Idea Fred. I hope to keep this thread going.

The good thing about Treasure Beach is you can make your own entertaiment when you want. We have lived here for 8 years having moved from Kinston. It is a beautiful place. Fresh air, waking up to the sound of birds, the sea, the sunset and the people.

Jamaica Observer Story:

"The aging of the population of developed countries, in particular the United States and Canada, creates enormous economic opportunities for Jamaica in the areas of health care/wellness, retirement communities, the demand for young workers in the US and tourism for older people....

There is a growing trend towards persons in developed countries retiring abroad, particularly to developing countries with warm climate because their income purchases more abroad than in the USA. The market for retirement facilities, therefore, will increase sharply in the next 20 years....

Jamaica has a comparative advantage suitable for the development of retirement communities because it has close proximity to the US, is English-speaking, has year-round warm weather, relatively lower wage levels and high-calibre doctors, nurses and health aides.
In addition, there are synergies with the tourism industry..."

Thank you Stu for posting the Observer article. I have been semi retired and staying 3 months each winter in Jamaica on the South Coast. And each year I experience and discover the wonder of Jamaica- the friendly open intelligent and warm people, exploring the beautiful mountains, beaches, landscape, and the "food". Everyday is a summer adventure and every night the stars shine. I have made many new friends- young, old - fishermen to doctors. Jamaica has been healing and healthy, has given so much to look forward to each winter.

Fred...I don't believe that you mentioned to the folks around here that you are a talented Albany, New York-based, professional photographer, with a real sensitivity for client diversity (loved those henna hands), "naturalness" and use of available light.

Could anyone imagine that with your experiences around Event Planning that Button Bay might become a South Coast venue for weddings and also musical stage-ings, as already inaugurated by William & Gladys.
Surely William, as part of the sale deal, could offer a few of his Nubian goats (as brawta) to mug for your camera?

Thank you for your compliment. Capturing the magical moments is what I do. 1/3 of what i do at this time is enjoying Jamaica in winter and the rest to wedding photography in NY. My past is also rooted in promoting tourism- I Love NY ads 80-90's. I do envision Button Bay for honeymooners as well as a site for weddings. I have met many couples who have gone to Jamaica off season for their honeymoon at the big resorts. We know what the South Coast offers - the gem of Jamaica - The Gold Coast" Goat cheese anyone?

I have read the messages above, Fred and I agree, Button Bay is beautiful. I've been thinking about how this would be a great opportunity to share such a wonderful place with others.

I have visited a few times and would like to know how we could get this 'off the ground". Any investors out there or people who would like to own share(s)? What are your thoughts?
