I think it would. However, it would depend on where it is located and what it has to offer. Would you be brining in tourists or would it be patronized only by the local community?

This is a great idea! Just spoke about it the other day when a family member of mine was very ill and time would have made a huge difference. "Stranger", if you don't mind, could I email you directly?

What are some of the thing that you would like to see at this center? where do you think would be a good location for all to benefit the most from it?

Define wellness center - what does it offer?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Karen Kennedy on Saturday, November 20, 2010 - 11:51 am: Edit Post

A few years ago there was a young man in the Peace Corps in Treasure Beach; due to extenuating circumstances, he left after a short while. One of his assignments had to do with assessing the need for health care for the residents in Treasure Beach. Because I knew something about the situation, I provided him with an outline from which he could start. But, because he was soon gone it was never used.

There is a definite need for more health care in Treasure Beach. Some of this is being fulfilled by the visiting medical teams who work at the Treasure Beach Women's Group. There are also dentists who come down to work in the area on an occasional basis.

While these do a world of good, one of the main problems is that people do not seek this sort of help until people have a medical condition that needs to be treated. Also, these visiting groups are able to come only a few times a year. There is no preventive medical or dental care. Another problem is that men normally do not seek medical help unless they are very sick or they have been pushed by a woman. (This is not special to Treasure Beach; it is common throughout the world.)

Also, there are medical conditions which are quite common in Treasure Beach which go untreated because people don't even know they have it. These include high cholesterol, diabetes, and high blood pressure. If people were aware they had these problems or were at the beginning stages, they could do something about it before things got worse and potentially life-threatening.

I believe it would be excellent to have a small facility open five days a week to which residents could go. It could be staffed by a nurse practitioner. There could be an additional nurse who would make home visits, both to the infirm and to "well" households to perform simple medical screenings. If permitted, physicians who visit the area might volunteer at this facility for one day while they are on vacation; perhaps they could be given a small discount on their accommodations for performing this service.

Assuming this or something similar is a good idea, the problems then become where it would be housed, who would administer it, and who would pay for it. We could not expect a staff to be unpaid, and there would be costs associated with the facility itself. I truly see a solution boiling down to money; without a guaranteed source of income, I am not sure how residents could expect the quality and accessibility they deserve.

Some very good ideas from Mrs. Kennedy. Would be wonderful if this could happen.

I could be wrong, but isn't a 'wellness centre' different from a clinic? Isn't it more like a fitness centre?

Hope your are wrong Mr. Reynolds. I think we need a health clinc way more than a fitness center.

Great ideas Ms Kennedy. In addition to those conditions you mention, I believe there is a great need for preventive screenings for mammograms, colorectal, and prostate. This is probably too ambitious at this stage, but would be quite something. Money as you say is the issue.

I truly agree with Ms. Kennedy, I would certainly love for us all to come up with some ideas as to how we can fund this type of clinic. Fund raising, a location someone that will take charge. THE need in Treasure is so great it's it cannot be written in words or on this web site.

Re wellness clinic. The focus of medicine today is prevention, early detecion and treatment with education being the greatest asset. Istayed healthy in TB to avoid the various conctions of duppy pumpkin, martel bush, cursie, marco polo, and a whole gambit of remedires Iwas afraid of being poisened.I hate to recall the traveling dentist who exracted perfectly good teeth behind a curtain because of a tooth ache.I can still hear the sound of mine dropping in a pail. I hope a wellness clinic becomes a reality and we find ways to help support this effort.

This is well needed and I have given thoughts of this all the time. I am a Critical Care Nurse, specializes in Cardiology, and would love to volunteer some time when I'm home in whatever capacity needed.

Does anyone know the formalities for allowing non-Jamaican medical personnel to practice in Jamaica?

This was such and interesting string and then noone bothered to write anymore. I know dancehall music is important to many but this is also an important thing.

Why should this string be closed? Are you planning to open a health clinic in Treasure Beach?

Hi 2 cents,I am going to dabble again...at the risk of being overbearing, etcetera, etcetera. The third 'poster' on this string asked for Wellness Centre to be defined, but stranger, the original poster, ignored the request, while everyone took off in flights of fancy, with all kinds of grandiose ideas!![edited by TB.Net] So, no more jacking around..CLOSE DE DANG THREAD! There, Bonaparte has spoken!!

I have a question Is it typical for us to take our ball and go home and play when we are not the center of the Universe. A health center in TB would be a blessing to the community and its visitors and also a retirement center. There are people looking for places to retire. The more interest generated the more likely we are to see good ideas on the table.TB has come a long way but still has needs to be met.We can lend our opnions even when we do not have the money. May be we will be able to invest through buying shares

Mr. Reynolds, I disagree that having some sort of health center in TB is a grandiose idea. We are not talking about building Buckingham Palace. We are talking about a small structure with maybe two employees plus several volunteers to serve the health needs of the entire community. IMHO I would suggest comparing yourself to Napoleon Bonaparte is a bit grandiose but I have never met you. Maybe you are equal to one of the most brilliant individuals in history.

2 cents, that was just a joke! I only meant that stranger may have had a fitness centre in mind, while others assumed she meant a Health Clinic. If she had clarified what she meant, all that would have been avoided. So having realised that people had higher expectations, she wanted to quietly withdraw. I could be wrong, but that's the impression I got.

Our senses of humor are far different. What you said was not a joke TO ME. If it was a joke why did you ask the string to be closed? THAT was funny?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Carlton Reynolds on Wednesday, December 08, 2010 - 08:36 pm: Edit Post

2 cents I was only echoing what stranger wanted...the joke part was the Bonaparte... thing. If you cant see anything funny in that I can't help you. Why don't you address the point that I raised about the intention of stranger and the direction that everyone else was taking. Most contributors seem to have misled themselves by jumping to conclusions. Only 'I' and G.I. sought clarification.Your angst would be best directed at 'stranger'. I could make a further observation about this situation, but I don't like red ink. When all is said and done...all is said and done...so close it indeed. This whole episode was comical indeed... you could find the humour too...if you look hard enough! [edited by TB.Net]
