I am looking for a prep school for my granddaughter. The school should be accessible to Southfield.Could anyone tell me if the Munro Prep School is for boys only or whether it is co-educational.

Perfect school for your child if you in that area. Munro Prep.

Not sure if Mrs Lodge is still the principal, but if she is not, she has laid the foundation and it remains a good school for 6 to 12 years olds.

For historical purposes, can anyone give the background on this school? I was told on a previous trip that Munro was once an all white school. Not looking for an argument, just interested in the history. When did the school start? Who started this school? When was it desegregated and when did it become co-ed?
From what I hear it is a very good school, just interested in how it came about.

Here's a start (Please correct any errors below):

Munro Prep is equivalent to elementary/middle/junior high school in the US. Its co-ed and, as noted above, takes 6-12 year olds (plus or minus in some cases.)

Some (most?) of its students go on to either Munro College (males) or Hampton School (females) for 1st form through 5th form, which is the similar as the US high school. They also have 6th form (two years) which is kinda sort of like junior college, but with responsibilities for monitoring the younger students.

All very good schools.

interested, i hope this helps both you and Looking who started the thread.

Munro Prep was never an all white school.

Munro College the city you see on top of the hill when looking from the lower lands was all white up until the 1940s

For the record Munro College and Munro Prep has no official affiliation.

I have no idea who started Munro Prep (I know Ms Lodge who lives in the area was a long time Principal). The kids who went there originally were mostly kids whose parents taught at Munro College or Hampton School, and kids whose parents worked at Alpart.

A lot of kids were from Junction, Top Hill & Southfield etc who may have been of lighter complexion, but there was never ever any segregation at Munro Prep.

The school was always coed. I stand corrected the age for attendance is from 3 - 12.

Munro Prep I have been told quite recently that the school is no longer totally independent of the Ministry of Education anymore, the teachers have to have the same training and qualification as those in the primary and all age (public) schools. The school also follows a similar curriculum as the public schools (but they have always done so, only now it's official).

Hope this clears clear up a whole lot of misunderstandings.

I think you were mixing up the history with Munro College or whoever told you were not very clear.

Once upon a time before common entrance now gsat (grade six achievement test) both Hampton school and Munro college were not Government funded schools, therefore admission to both was based on having strong economic background. Dr. Everett Allen R.I.P was said to be the first boy of color to attend Munro College, some say it was Former Chief Justice Ira Rowe as well this was in the early 1940s, after that many parents in St. Elizabeth who had 'bright' children made the financial sacrifices to send their dark skinned children to Munro College.

I hope this helps.

Hello interested. I smiled when I saw your question. I am nearly 60 years old, born and raised in St Elizabeth where a lot of my contemporaries went to Munro College. The shade of their skin was never a pre-requisite to entry; their ability was.The nature of our turbulent and tragic history would suggest that many of our institutions under British rule favoured segregation;the divide and rule form of control. However, I can only surmise that as time went on our colonisers realised that it was not economically viable and buckled under the pressure to reform- just a theory.

Just to emphasise that the "College" in Munro College does not mean that it is equivalent to an American college. In the British/ Jamaican system many high schools are called college.

Incidentally, there is a Munroe College in New York!

I am not happy to see a Hamptonian writing on this forum and using such horrible spellings such as 'skool' for school and 'ma' for my present school. {edited by TB.Net} During Ms. G. K. Wesleygammon's time she would implore us 'not to be of the common garden type'. With all this internet language etc. I know it's easy to be tempted but please be an example for others to follow.
