Thanks for the kind words, Erol.

The plight of Miss Joyce really touched the nation and I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to reach out to her on behalf of my newsroom and sympathetic members of the public.

I can confirm that she is receiving many offers of support and that some persons have already visited her and delivered on some of those offers.

May I enquire as to which Miss Joyce this refers. I am unfamiliar with this story and would appreciate more information.

I think that it is a remarkable thing when we use our influence as public figures in ways that bring hope to the displaced in our society. As we embark on this journey called life, we should always strive to rise to the top ourselves and allow people like Miss Joyce to soar. Earl's compassion was brought to bear on a story that required no less; and in his usual fine form he delivered a story that touched the heart and mind of all who heard it. This story has blessed many, but most of all it brought to Miss Joyce the peace she deserves. Thanks Earl for being you.

Miss Joyce is an elderly lady who sells her few wares at Heywood Street in the Kingston Market District. She is quite frail and does not have a child of her own; her only daughter died many years ago.

When the police came by in their “market enforcement” exercise a week ago one of them grabbed some of poor Miss Joyce’s goods, which she had borrowed $5000.00 to purchase, and drove off with them, claiming that she was vending illegally.

From all accounts Miss Joyce was not vending illegally. She does not appear to be an itinerant vendor, but rather, one with a fixed stall at a location approved by the city authority, the KSAC.

She was captured by TVJ in Wednesday evening’s news weeping bitterly, deeply hurt at how she had been treated and wondering aloud how she was going to repay the loan she had taken to purchase the items that the police had “confiscated”. So, on Thursday, TVJ did a follow-up, giving her an opportunity to tell her story, explaining her personal circumstances and the difficulties she has had, including major surgery recently.

Miss Joyce is such a compelling “witness” in her own defence and her life story evokes such sympathy that there has been an outpouring of support for her. It has not been just talk, however; tangible help is being given to her and so her future might be somewhat better than her recent past.

It must be emphasized, by the way, that the police operation has generally had some good outcomes. The streets in the market district are by and large clear for the first time in many years, allowing vehicles and pedestrians to go about freely, and huge piles of garbage have been cleared from the area. That can only be good for the city and the country.

Where there is excess or abuse, however; this must be pointed out and redress pursued.
