We've been getting serious rain since last night Roads are starting to flood out. The road to Billy's Bay is now impassable by cars.

Me . . . well I'm stuck in Negril. I came on Sunday evening to celebrate my parents' 60th wedding anniversary yesterday and we were heading home today. Now we are being evacuated from our room on the cliffs due to the very high seas and no way we are driving home in this.

Photos soon come!

Well, it is absolutely pouring in Negril. We were moved to an upstairs room in our place by the sea and now they've evacuated us to a place across the street as the waves are getting more and more intense.

Reports from TB are off and on torrential rain with the usual areas flooding. The sea is rough but not crashing over any walls.

Just got this update from Debbian at Treasure Tours speaking of Treasure Beach:

Some of the roads are blocked with water. Currently we do not have any electricity. I have Internet on my phone but my phone battery might soon die if we don't get electricity soon. -Debbian

Well, we left Negril at 11 this morning and have reached Savannah-la-mar by 3:00 p.m. This trip would normally take 30 minutes tops. The roads are absolutely impassable. We had water up to the headlights on the car driving through some water on the road today. My mother had water above her shoes on the floor of the back seat. The only way we got through was with a lot of prayer and the fact that I have a stick shift and could rev the engine as we travelled through the water.

Reports from TB are lots of flooding out. Road flooded going into Billy's Bay. Love Lane entrance flooded. Lots and lots of water on the road.

Reports from TB are no electricity since about noon today. Most places don't have land line phones. I am hearing the sea is bad but not as bad as with some of the hurricanes we've had. However, beach erosion is happening everywhere. Last report, Eggie's Bar was still up but that was around noon today. Haven't gotten an update since then.

I feel very fortunate to be in Hotel Commingle in Sav. We have a generator and Internet service. We may just stay here tomorrow as I am not hearing good reports of the roads in Ferris, Belmont, Hodges, Fullerswood, etc.

A shout- out to everyone.

I spoke to my cousin today and from what I heard things are not too pleasant in TB with the weather.

I wish you all well. Keep safe.

Safe journey home Rebecca.

Just heard from Debbian. She said the sea is very bad right now. She was calling me from Billy's Bay beach. She said one boat was stuck out at sea and could not come in due to the high waves. He is right there, they can see him and he is safe, but he cannot attempt to come in to shore while the sea is so rough.

The sea is up to Lennox's bar.

Nicole pains - 2 dead, 6 missing as storm ravages

Nicole hits infrastructure, property islandwide

Thursday, September 30, 2010

FLOOD waters killed two persons yesterday and swept away six others, who are feared dead, as Tropical Storm Nicole drenched the entire island, destroying infrastructure, property and crops that will likely amount to millions of dollars in losses.

Last night, the Meteorological Service warned Jamaicans to brace for more showers and thunderstorms which, it said, would continue to affect the island for the next 48 hours.

"Rainfall data indicate that accumulations in excess of 100 millimetres collected over a 12-hour period have been recorded at various weather stations across the island," the Met Service said in a late evening news release.

The dead persons were yesterday identified as 14-year-old Keniji Boyd of St Andrew and 73-year-old St Elizabeth farmer Lenford Blake.

Residents of Flagaman in St Elizabeth said Blake, who was deaf, was having drinks with friends in a bar in that community when heavy rains started about midnight Wednesday. He decided to cross the road, which was under water that had spilled over from a gully, despite being discouraged by his friends. He was swept into a culvert.

His body was found further down the hill yesterday morning with broken bones.

Yesterday, his grandniece Shauna Reynolds described him as a "very kind, gentle, loving, caring person" who would always give from his farm to anyone in need.

Boyd was one of six persons living in a house in Sandy Park near Liguanea, St Andrew which collapsed into a gully during the heavy downpour early yesterday morning.

The others — William Bailey, his common-law wife Skeeta Young, 34 and children Brandy Fritz, 11; Kevani and Sedani Bailey, four and six respectively — were swept away by the angry flood waters and were still missing up to press time last night.

News of the tragedy left scores of people in the community in shock, among them Daisy Young, a diabetic 55-year-old, who said her daughter and grandchildren were among those missing.

"All now me cannot come to me senses," said Young. "A sleep me a sleep and me hear me daughter scream yu nuh man, and a call for her help."

Young, tears rolling down her cheeks, said when she opened her door to look, her daughter's house was gone.

The sixth person missing and feared dead is an unidentified young man who attempted to cross a flooded ford at Harbour View and was overcome by the force of the flood waters.

"Jesus!" screamed one lady who was among scores of shocked onlookers who watched in horror as he was swept away.

"Look how the man go give away him life," said one man.

Yesterday, two fishermen from Treasure Beach, St Elizabeth, who went out to sea in an attempt to ride out the storm, were reported to be stranded about a mile off Dilly's Bay.

The Observer was told that one of them has fallen seriously ill and needs medical attention. However, the turbulent sea and poor visibility are preventing their rescue by either boat or helicopter.

In Spanish Town, St Catherine, the only access to the Brunswick community was via the dug-out shell of two old refrigerators which young men skilfully manoeuvred through the waist-high muddy water gushing throughout the lanes and into houses.

Rosemarie Willis, who ventured through the knee-deep water to stand with the group of curious onlookers on the other side, watched helplessly as water seeped into her house, where her mother was still trapped.

"All of me daughter GSAT (Grade Six Achievement Test) books them wet up, over $12,000 worth. What me going to do now," she lamented.

The residents are terrified that they could drown in their homes if the rain continues into Friday as forecast.

"Is from ten last night (Wednesday) this water stay so and see all now it not even a draw," said one resident, pointing to a watermark at the top of a five-foot wall.

Councillor for the area Althea Tomlinson blamed the rising flood waters on an inadequate and poorly maintained drainage system.

"The entire Crescent division is affected by a drain problem and I am tired of complaining about it and nothing is being done," she told the Observer as she stood with a group of residents watching helplessly as the water continued to rise.

Meanwhile, a trek on foot through the Bog Walk Gorge revealed that Flat Bridge was completely covered with water which spilled over from the Rio Cobre unto a large section of the roadway, dumping tonnes of sand and mud in some sections.

Although the flood gates — which are to be closed when the Gorge is impassable — remained open, not even the bravest of motorists dared to venture into the Gorge.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management yesterday reported that a group of persons was trapped in the Gorge since Tuesday evening, but up to press time it was still not clear if they were rescued.

The situation was equally grave in Lauriston where 32 persons were sheltering at the Shiloah Basic School after the angry, swirling waters from the Rio Cobre drove them from their homes in the wee hours of yesterday morning.

Councillor for Lauriston Keisha Lewis said the community of Waterloo was also under serious threat of being flooded as there was a major problem with the drains.

"We are concerned that the water level is rising and with the rain expected to continue for a few days the residents are getting themselves in a state of readiness to leave if they have to," she told the Observer.

On Mandela Highway several trees were downed along the busy thoroughfare while there was major flooding in some sections.

The rains left several roads in St Mary impassable and cut off many communities.

Mayor of Port Maria Richard Creary told the Observer that while there were no reports of major flooding, a number of roads in the parish were blocked by landslides and fallen trees and that some road surfaces were also badly scoured.

Among the roads affected were Richmond, Junction, Halifax, Coffee Gully, Derry, Border, Platfield, Jones Rock, Lucky Hill, Bernard, Barracks River, Enfield and Carron Hall.

In St Elizabeh, water was reported to be rising in New Market; 125 families were said to have been flooded out in Braes River; some sections of the capital town Black River, including the hospital compound, were said to be under water from sea surges; while a number of roads in the Maggotty, Lacovia area were blocked by water from the Black River.

The Great Pond in Treasure Beach is overflowing with rising water and the drain canal that has been under construction for four years but has not been completed is not helping, residents said.

Roads in Manchester were also said to be under water, while sea surges were reported to have damaged a section of the popular Little Ochi restaurant.

Residents of Downs also reported that two houses lost their roofs to what they said was a "mini tornado" Wednesday night, while extensive damage was done to the roofs of four other houses

Our thoughts, prayers and good wishes are with you all in TB and Billys Bay. Hope you all made it through the storm with minimal damage.

We're getting the effects of Nicole today on the East Coast with heavy winds and torrential rains expected this evening and into Friday in the Boston area, but I'm sure nowhere near as intense as you had.

The sun is trying to peep out both in TB and in Sav. We are going to hit the road in about an hour after I take full advantage of this generator and charge everything up.

Of course, I will be taking photos when I get home, but if you don't hear from me just know that means no electricity and/or phone/internet.

Everyone is okay on Love Lane. Goldie's house flood out during the peak of the storm, but the water has receded now and she is back in the house.

The water going out of the lane was about 3 1/2 to 4 feet deep.

Just got a call from rebecca. She and her parents are back in Treasure Beach safe and sound.

No reports of any injuries and Eggys bar still stands proud.

There is no current in the area, and not expected back until Saturday.

The road to great bay is passable and it and Station road are in good shape.

She has not been able to get to Billys Bay yet. Lots of water from Love Lane to Cherry Bottom.

She has lots of pictures which will be posted which current returns.

Why can't people just type in their names for things of this nature?

We are all trying to find out the where about of families and friends and this is a good thing, so don't be shy, please put your names, "no harm in doing that".

Rebecca, please make it home safely and take pictures, OK!

God Bless,

I have seen photos, and they have said a lot...My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time... Just take comfort in knowing that God is standing by. His Love will not take us, where his Grace cannot keep us. Keep the faith, I know it's hard, but never give up...With God all things are possible...

The sun has actually peeked it's head out a few times this morning. However, the rain has too!

We got electricity back last night around 9:30. Internet and phones are still up and down. There are parts of TB, Bluntus, etc. that still do not have electricity but most do.

The water going through Cherry Bottom is now only ankle deep so I will get down to Billy's Bay today to take photos.

I will post photos shortly.

It's been pouring down rain since 1:00 again. The flood waters that were draining are all right back up there again. I've heard one report of 20 inches of rainfall since yesterday. With this rain we are getting now it is easily 23 inches.

Sorry, but with this rain, "me nah go nowhere!"

I do have a friend who has a 4 x 4 set up to take me around tomorrow as my car cannot go through these waters.

Jerry and Nandy's boats are still anchored at sea as it is to rough for either to come in as their boats are larger. Both boats are within sight of the shore line and smaller boats have been able to go to them to bring them food, etc. so they are okay.

with respect to everyone

how about using your energies to send positive vibrations and anything else you can at this time to our friends and family who are in desperate need

you do not have insurance and have had your house or business flooded out, in some cases both - think about how you would be feeling right now

i have heard that people are just devastated and don't know where to turn - all their possessions are wet and their morale is low

so don't forget that we are here to create a positive vibration and let's do that at the very least

blessed

There is a serious drainage problem in TB! I feel it for everyone who lives there including my family. There is also a serious beach erosion problem. The community needs help - my proposal is that some of the funds that are coming in from donors to say Breds etc. may need to be channelled into these areas. Breds have so many other projects running too including the Park so I guess it's easier said than done. Something needs to be done urgently though! The government obviously have failed as evidenced with the incomplete Canal. God help us.

Well, the weather satellite is giving me more hope today.

http://www.weather.com/maps/maptype/satelliteworld/atlanticoceansatellite_large_ animated.html

However, we've had rain all night long again, with a hard rain since 5 this morning which is just starting to let up now. Hmm, and as soon as I typed the previous sentence it has started to rain hard again.

I hope to get out today thanks to a friend with a high truck and see what is happening. So if all goes well, I will have photos later.

Due to all the rain from 1:00 yesterday afternoon many of the roads are again impassable by car.

Most of us do still have electricity and the phone service seems to be better since yesterday. However, Lewistown, parts of Bluntus, Fisherman's Lane and a few other spots still do not have electricity since Tuesday.

Thanks for the photos Rebecca. In case we forget, we are reminded at least once a year what an invaluable addition you are to the community.

If I'm looking correctly, #5 is a telling photo. In the background, to the right and beyond the gatepost, is where a great portion of water flows down from the hills. I really believe that this is our ground zero for any water management in the area. If the water could be channelled from there into Great Pond, then properly guided out through the canal, a great deal of the flooding could be alleviated.

Well, I have to say I am pleasantly surprised to see how much the water has receded since Thursday, especially since we had lots of rain up to early this morning.

It seems the canal is doing it's job of draining the water from Great Pond and saving lots of folks from being flooded out. I did not see any houses flooded out this morning except Keith's. Maybe there were houses flooded out during the peak of the water but I did not see any this morning.

The sea has calmed way down since Thursday, but boy, did we loose a lot of sand!

I would say cars can pass everywhere now, however, Cherry Bottom is still pretty deep.

Big up and thanks to Carvel for taking me around this morning in his large van. My car still has two inches of water on the floor in the back from it's adventures from Negril so I just didn't want to push it any further.

Carvel said he has seen at least 3 sea turtle nests washed away due to the storm. He has not had a chance to take a full inventory as the rain has just stopped a few hours ago.

We've had no rain since about 8 this morning but the sky looks pretty grey right now. I haven't seen so much laundry hanging on lines in TB at one time since Hurricane Dean, including my own! Please don't rain again until it dries!!

I have to say in driving around this morning my thoughts were, yeah we had a hit for sure, but boy it could have been so much worse. The roads took a bit of a beating and the pot holes are now abundant but all roads are passable with no major washouts. The flooding and damage to personal property was minimal compared to other storms. Again, I think Nicole left her mark most on the beaches. The erosion is bad and we can only pray Mother Nature does her thing and replace the sands soon.

You can view photos here or by the link in the Photo Gallery
