Bravo to the TBWG for putting on yet another Health Clinic for the people of Treasure Beach. You unselfish ladies deserve much praise for holding these Health Clinics on a continuing basis. As a volunteer for a similar organization here in Michigan, I can attest to the enormous amount of behind the scenes work that goes into arranging and running such a function.

The TBWG with the Hillsborough County Osteopathic Medical Society of Florida have been working hard along with the volunteers of the Queensbury Missionary Church hosting this week's health clinic. They have been seeing just under 50 persons per day. There are 16 volunteers here this week from the US.

Thanks to all involved for making this another successful week!

One of the highlights of this week is the Farewell Dinner on Friday night. This year's dinner was no exception. Members of the Hillsborough County Osteopathic Medical Society of Florida, the Queensbury Missionary Church, TBWG, and lots of others who participated in making this a great week attended.

Gifts and certificates were awarded. Friendships were cemented, great food, great entertainment, and lots of laughter.

One of the best parts of the night is when Dr. Webster reads the poems he has created to commemerate the week. We've posted them below for all to enjoy.

A New Outreach For Us

Things were different this year,
As to a new area we did travel.
The Queensbury Missionary Church opened its doors,
For us to treat patients at a new level.

High into the hills we did go,
To service the people of Southfield.
It seemed a bit rural to us,
But so many patients it did yield.

They came from near and far,
In numbers beyond our expectations.
Nearly two hundred were treated there,
And showed us so much appreciation.

We treated patients from age 1 to 90,
With hope of relieving their pain.
Our hands of touch and special care,
Gave them hope that we’ll return again.

So thanks to all that came our way,
Especially to the women of Treasure Beach.
This is our third year with their help,
As they provide a special community outreach.

So, as we say goodbye tonight,
We are thankful for the time we’ve shared.
May this outreach continue to grow,
And return again this time next year.

These Medical Students
Make It All Worthwhile

So, here we are the last night of our adventure,
With twelve medical students – the best by any measure.
They came not knowing what to expect,
And will leave with well earned respect.

They performed every task they were asked to do,
And did their very best for me and for you.
Such talent they exhibited with just one year of medical college,
It was great to work with them, to see their medical knowledge.

Still, their training has a long way to go,
Before we can call them all DO.
But to us they surely showed they have the will,
That as osteopathic physicians they’ll prove their skill.

To be with these students makes it all worthwhile,
And I wish we had time with them to walk another mile.
My thanks go out to these special twelve,
For without them this week could not evolve.

So, as we leave this special place,
We admire how they performed with style and grace.
Now to each one we wish great success,
As these doctors will strive to be the very best.

“Bring us your pained and your aching.”

So said the call of the Treasure Beach Women’s Group Benevolent Society’s (TBWG) Free Health Clinic this past July.

Extending healing hands and outreach to the community of Queensbury, Southfield, the TBWG hosted a free health clinic at Queensbury Missionary Church, July 19th through the 22nd, 2010. In collaboration with Hillsborough County Osteopathic Medical Society of Florida, USA, and the Queensbury Missionary Church, this was the first time TBWG had taken their “Free Health Clinic” on the road. And what a resounding success it was.

The American medical team from Florida consisted of Dr. Kenneth Webster, Director of The Hillsboro County Osteopathic Society of Florida, practicing Doctor of Osteopathy, Douglas L. Nelson, twelve energetic medical students, and sister-assistants, Lisa and Sharon.

Conducting regular medical checks including blood pressure, blood sugar and, with a focus on pain checks and pain management through osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT), the doctors and students attended to nearly 200 patients ranging in age from one to ninety. (Several happy, suddenly sprightly, pain-free people returned for additional OMT on other days.)

Jamaica’s own Medical Doctor, William Lockyear, graciously drove himself far from the madding crowds of Kingston to the laid back farmlands of Queensbury to conduct thorough medical exams alongside his osteopathic medicine counterparts.

Each day the medical team and all volunteers were treated to a lunch of traditional Jamaican fare, prepared by Queensbury Missionary Church sisters, that included the national dish, ackee and salt fish, corn beef and cabbage, bami, and a fresh-squeezed cucumber, guava and mango juices. Much of the food was produce grown and donated by Queensbury community members who either partook of the clinic’s services and/or volunteered.

The coming together for healing of these neighbouring communities was truly heaven-sent. There was a sense of giving, love, and reciprocity throughout the four-day affair and this was evidenced by the many glowing comments, smiling faces and inspirations.

Dr. Webster was moved to write a poem entitled, “A New Outreach For Us” which he shared at the Friday-night farewell dinner. Dr. Nelson confessed his surprise and delight in the sophistication of the Queensbury farmer patients. “… They were so engaged and present with me in the room.” A self-proclaimed man of few words, Pastor James of Queensbury Missionary Church shared, “We were very appreciative...It is definitely something we would like to see happen again.” TBWG Co-founder, Celeste Anderson declared, “I think this is the beginning of a new partnership.” As she reminded, “It takes a village.”

The TBWG Free Health Clinic in Queensbury could not have happened without the support of the village – a village that extends beyond geographical and all other distinguishing boundaries.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Dr. Kenneth Webster, Dr. Douglas L. Nelson, Dr. William Lockyear, Dr. S. Dale Thames, of Junction, the medical students, Queensbury Missionary Church, Pastor James, Hillsborough County Osteopathic Medical Society of Florida, Taino Cove, Treasure Tours, Jakes, Captain Peck, the children of the TBWG Summer Camp (for their handmade beaded bracelets which were presented to each of the medical students,) everyone who attended the clinic, waiting patiently, sometimes for hours, to be seen, and the many, many, volunteers who stapled, folded, mopped, chopped, carried, cooked, farmed, filed, nursed, and generally “traveled the extra mile” to make this inaugural event happen. And last but not least, we cannot forget Janet and Erik Nichols-McPeek, “farmers” of the original seed for a Treasure Beach Women’s Group Benevolent Society Free Health Clinic.
