My friend Leandy called me over to a tree yesterday and pointed. It took me a while to see where he was pointing. He said he has watched the female Doctor Bird build the nest, lay the eggs and these two little guys are 1 1/2 weeks old.

The nest is about 1 1/2 inches high and about 1 inch diameter. The babies are so very tiny!

Enjoy!

Each time I see a doctor bird nest with babies I can hardly believe it. Thanks for these lovely photos.

How fortunate you are Rebecca. Thanks for sharing a little piece of Paradise with us.

I agree Green. I went back to see them today but they've flown out of the nest!

"...they've flown out of the nest!", as it should be Rebecca. There are no caged birds in Paradise. Dare I say you yourself are an uncaged bird that brings so much to all of us who enjoy this site.

Great photos, reminds me of an incident years ago. A mama doctor bird parked her tiny fledgling on a lignum vitae branch that drooped down into our very spiky, thorny cereus, where even our kestrel wouldn't try to intrude. A spot less than 10 yards from the Hikaru patio, so we watched with fascination as she fed the little guy in that secure perch for maybe 24 hours; then s/he was gone.

Wow! I like that analogy Green. Thanks!

The good news is I saw the two babies flitting around in the tree today. It was so much fun to watch them enjoying their new found talent of flight. And they're soooooo tiny!

Hi Rebecca,
Your pictures sure brought back memories to me.I would sit on my moms veranda and watch these beautiful birds for hours as they go about extracting the nectar from the flowers.
I love all birds but these Humming/Doctor Birds are my favorites.

Rebecca.. try catching one if you can.

Hey Murnel. Glad the photos brought back memories for you. Eric and I once had to capture a doctor bird in a particular position to use for a website. We sat still and took about 300 photos before we got one we could use.

I think doctor birds are more camera shy than I am!

I viewed with ruffled emotions...The wealth I have left behind cannot be bought with all the dollars here in the US.Fantastic picture! Lets not forget the tremendous skill that went into making that intricate nest that is masterly fastened to the branch. Tenk u very much Rebecca !! Can anyone tell why they are called god bird ?

Maybe because they are so beautiful and do bring
tranquility into ones life if you so wish to meditate while watching them.
God do bring peace and harmony if we ask him to grand us that.
This is my answer.Hope it helps.
God Bird/Humming Bird/Doctor Bird they all sound good to me.
Love all birds.
