I read somewhere that tap water in treasure beach was not safe to drink. Is this true?

I've been drinking it, lots of it, for the last 16 years and I feel no ill effect. Actually, growing up on artesian well water I've become a bit of a water tasting snob. Often when I visit family and friends in the US I dislike the taste of their tap water. The water here, in my opinion, tastes quite good.

I judge a restaurant by the quality of the water served. If there is no care in this, I always suspect that care may be lacking in the kitchen also.

I drink TB tap water too.

I always drink from the tap when in Ja. I've had no problems at all. It's delicious.

I have never had any ill effects from the drinking water and I have been coming to TB for more than 10 years. No matter where I travel I always bring my medicine kit which contains pepto bismol and immodium.

For anyone that's afraid to drink the water.
Here is a solution.
Just take some PUR water purification packets with you and drink away.

jamaica has its problems but the quality of our water has never been one of them. I am in my late 50's and was brought up on clean running water straight from the tap. The interesting thing is I've been to many first world countries where I have been advised not to drink the water!

Along the same vein as edward french, there was a recent pipe break in Great Bay, and I heard there was a recommendation to boil the water. Can anyone shed some light on the subject?

Police academy still polluting Great Bay? When are they to leave as I would rather come back when they are gone?

Bottled water is tap water. I'm sure some of the TB.net readers remember drinking water that came as rain onto a zink roof into a metal drum and had mosquito larva swimming around and a little bit of kerosene oil to control the larva. I'm still alive and well along with others in and from Treasure Beach. Be more worried about the fish you might be eating in the next while and the ocean you swim in, no fault of the fishermen. A valid point is that water from the main pipe (National Water Commission) is treated properly and safe to drink. Water that is "caught" from rain and stored in tanks has the ~possibility~ to be contaminated with the larva, etc. Nigel talks about.

Know the source and how its managed.

Having said all that, I've never had any problems drinking main or caught water.

Hello Everyone:....Read.. then do not be afraid to drink our water.
Most likely we are all drinking RAIN water world-wide.
The water from the taps/pipes/faucets in our homes at some point comes by way of underground water supply from Rivers/Streams/Lakes/Wells are treated to remove impurities and harmful organisms then pumped into Reservoirs.

Let's face it Rain water is not harmful if handled properly. Please use clean sterile containers to catch your water.

Let it rain for a while so all the acid from the dust, exhaust fumes, and other fumes are washed out of the Air and from your Roofs, then catch your water and before you are ready to drink add some PUR or BOIL your water let it cool in the refrigerator or add some ice and.... Drink Away.

Let's face it most people in the Tropics were brought up drinking rain water straight from the skies but, and there is a But our atmosphere was much, much cleaner then.

Tanks were popular then and still is.
I think every household should try and build a good tank. We cannot live without Water.
My Mom had one when we were small, now it seems those Big Black Drums have taken the place of the Tanks.Time for changes I guess.Sometimes change is good....But I still prefer a "Good Built Tank".

I promise I will send some PUR packets if they are ever requested.
God Bless.

Thanks for bringing this up EF. Let us not forget the chemicals and other things that get into our underground water. Some get into our bodies and into the sea ultimately.

Thanks Murnel Ebanks, my plan includes catchment water, cleansed and mineralised.

I really don't think Mr. Finch must "name his source". My goodness, a legitimate question was asked. Answers were given. Let's all just take a deep drink of water and move on.

Some people get stomach upset from different water whenever they travel even if it is to London or Paris or Chicago. If you are one of those people I urge you to bring your own water bottle and fill it with chilled, boiled water. Don't buy a case of bottled water and toss the plastic empty bottles. By the way, the water in T/B is better than where I live in the US.

Of course you will get "foreign" microbes from the food and the water when you are in any new (foreign) location.

I had a slight reaction to the local "critters" when I first came to Ja which lasted about a day, but have drunk the water every time and it is fine.

I was under the impression that the water in Tr Beach comes from the mountains...?

Does someone know the source?

I believe it's from a well Brandy. Possibly Honslough (unsure of spelling, or another location a little closer. I was born and grown in Treasure Beach, travel back often, and never had a problem. My wife who's from another country comes there and drink the same water and has no prob. So I suggest to everyone that any fears about our agua is purely imagined.
