Treasure Beach Foundation is delighted to announce the winners of our scholarships for the 2010-2011 school year.

dianaleeallen
Diana-Lee Allen is the recipient of a full scholarship to Manchester High School. She was judged as an outstanding student from a variety of standpoints including her grades in school, the recommendation of her teacher, her thoughtful and interesting essays, and her GSAT scores. Diana told us when she looks in her future she sees herself “as Dr. Diana-Lee Allen, head of the pediatric department at Kingston University Hospital.” This is a lofty goal but perhaps not too ambitious for a student who is described as “a positive role model, motivated, independent, enthusiastic, and hardworking.”

rowenapowell
Rowena Powell has been awarded a three-quarter scholarship to Black River High School. Her favorite subject is mathematics. Her teacher told us Rowena is “intelligent, jovial, and reliable”—and feels she will “be an asset to her community in education and sports as she excels in both areas.” Rowena has been inspired by Helen Keller, especially by her tenacity. When she grows up, Rowena would like to be a teacher. She would like to “help other students achieve their goals just like my teachers who always want to help me.”

tannieselewis
Tanniese Lewis has also been awarded a three-quarter scholarship to Black River High School. Tanniese is quite interested in becoming a chartered accountant—and perhaps even opening a bank in the future. Her teacher describes her as “a high achiever, sociable, caring, and kind.” Tanniese made a point of explaining the sacrifices her parents have made to do their best to provide her with the books and other materials it has taken her to succeed; she would really like to give her mother some relief by having her high school expenses covered by a scholarship.

javinritchie
Javin Ritchie will receive a one-half scholarship to Black River High School. Javin’s teacher told us he “works independently, participates in class, listens attentively, has high hopes, and works hard to be at the top of his class.” He is described as “the true epitome of a gentleman and displays positive values for others to emulate.” We were impressed with a lot of things about Javin, one of them being how hard he worked to improve his grades from last year to this year. He is quite creative and is interested in several different professional areas including architecture and building.

Please join us in congratulating all the winners—and all those who have provided so much encouragement and guidance to them over the years.

Congratulations to each of the winners! I, once again, had the privilege of taking the photos. This is absolutely the best photo gig I have each year!!

The absolute joy each student has is just wonderful to see.

Thank you so very much Treasure Beach Foundation and all who participate in making this moment happen. As I said to each student this morning, this is not something you won, this is something you earned and for that you deserve to be very proud of yourselves. Now the hard work will begin.

Enjoy some other photos I took this morning!
You can view them here or by the link in the Photo Gallery

Now that's a happy young lady!

Wow, congratulations to all of the students who have worked so hard and achieved great things at Sandy Bank Primary School and beyond. It's wonderful to see so many familiar faces in the photos throughout this website. I can't wait to come back to Treasure Beach and see and experience the progress being made in education there. Thank you, Treasure Beach Foundation, for all of the great work you do yourselves and encourage others to do as well.

Will you be changing jobs?

This is my first time hearing about a Three-Quarter scholarship, how does it work?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Treasure Beach Foundation on Friday, June 25, 2010 - 07:56 am: Edit Post

Our scholarship program has now entered its fifth year. Over the years, we have changed the program somewhat—attempting to make it as fair as possible to all the students involved.

After much consideration—and face-to-face meetings with the principals of all the high schools, our Board of Directors has chosen to award continuing scholarships based upon how well a student does each year. This was also a unanimous decision by the high school principals. This means, for instance, that a student who starts with a half-scholarship could earn a three-quarter or full scholarship for the following year if he or she does particularly well. It also means a student who received a full scholarship at the beginning might only be awarded a one-half or three-quarter scholarship for the following year if he or she does not receive outstanding grades. We decided this was a more fair way of rewarding those students who continue to work very hard, meaning high achievers would have an opportunity to be rewarded—and those who did not do as well were not automatically guaranteed a “free ride” for many more years.

Similarly, we do not necessarily decide all who are awarded new scholarships should get exactly the same level of support when they enter grade 7. That’s why we have awarded full, three-quarter, and half scholarships for the coming year. (Please remember that each student might get a different level of support for grade 8; that allows them the opportunity to “determine their own fate.”)

Our scholarships cover all school expenses: transportation (very expensive from Treasure Beach), school and lab fees, uniforms and shoes, school supplies, books, lunches, snacks, and more. A full scholarship is valued at more than $2,000 (USD) per year; a three-quarter scholarship is valued at $1,500+ a year, and a half-scholarship is worth in excess of $1,000 per year.

Our scholarships extend for up to seven years, assuming a student does not fall too low in their grades. If a student is dropped from the program, they have an opportunity to re-apply if they have been able to improve their grades.

Excellent to learn a young man was among the scholarship winners this year. Being a mother of both girls and boys, I know boys often start out more slowly in school and seem to have less interest in their subjects. It would be nice to see more young men in the Winners Circle next year. Sometimes they need more encouragement in their school work from their parents than do the girls.

Totiana (Totty) Parchment-Hutchinson is not changing jobs. In addition to her regular employment, she handles our bookkeeping in Jamaica along with several other important responsibilities for us. This is her way of giving back to the community, and we applaud and greatly appreciate all she does to assist with making the scholarship program run so smoothly.
